C'mon Southland, keep up with the changing times!
Well done Nelson/Tasman for this change in bylaw.
From today, new cat management bylaw requirements are now in place for both Tasman District and Nelson City. These rules aim to support responsible pet ownership, improve animal welfare outcomes, and help reunite lost cats with their families more effectively.
👉🏼Tasman District Council
From 1 June 2026, all domestic cats over the age of six months in Tasman District must be:
• Microchipped
• Registered with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR)
• Desexed
👉🏼Nelson City Council
From 1 June 2026, all domestic cats over the age of four months in Nelson City must be:
• Microchipped
• Registered with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR)
• Desexed
Both bylaws included a transition period up until today, 1 June 2026, to support guardians to meet the requirements.
From an NZCAR perspective, accurate microchipping and registration are essential. A microchip only becomes truly effective when it is linked to up-to-date guardian contact details in the NZCAR. This information plays a vital role in reuniting lost pets, supporting responsible ownership, and assisting councils, vets, and animal agencies in emergency and rehoming situations.
If your cat already meets these requirements, there is nothing further you need to do. We do encourage all guardians to take a moment to check their NZCAR details are current and correct.
