Not every dog NEEDS a walk every single day.
What dogs actually need is mental stimulation, structure, play, training, rest, and the ability to switch off.
If you’re short on time one day, a backyard training session, enrichment activity, flirt pole session, sniffing games, or some quality play time can be MORE than enough for your dog.
People get so caught up in the idea that dogs need hours and hours of exercise every day, but in reality a lot of dogs are actually over-stimulated, over exercised, and completely unable to settle.
Your dog is also okay being home alone while you work.
The most well-behaved dogs I meet are often the ones left home for standard working hours because they’ve learnt an important skill how to relax and do nothing.
Dogs need A LOT of sleep.
When they don’t get enough rest, they can become destructive, reactive, hyperactive, anxious, and unable to regulate themselves.
Yes, sometimes destructive behaviour can come from boredom or lack of exercise but honestly, a huge amount of it comes from dogs never being taught how to settle and self-regulate.
I see so many rescue dogs placed into homes where people are told:
“Don’t leave them alone for more than 4 hours.”
But the reality is… people work. Families work. Life exists outside of our dogs. And that’s okay. How are we expected to provide for our dogs if we don’t work!!
Dogs can absolutely learn that:
• when you’re home = they get love, training, walks, play, and quality time
• when you’re gone = it’s time to rest and switch off
Instead, so many dogs are put into constant stimulation daycare every day, endless exercise, constant entertainment and they never actually learn how to settle.
That can create anxious, reactive, stressed dogs that struggle being alone, struggle relaxing, and struggle coping with everyday life.
I’ve also seen amazing potential homes get turned away by rescues simply because they work standard hours. Those same people often go on to buy dogs elsewhere, and those dogs end up living incredible lives loved, trained, balanced, fulfilled, and cared for deeply.
Having a job does NOT make you a bad dog owner.
Missing one walk does NOT make you a bad dog owner.
A balanced dog is not created through constant exhaustion.
A balanced dog is created through structure, rest, training, fulfilment, and learning how to exist calmly in everyday life 🤍
