Why does my dog get ear infections? 🐶

Ear infections in pets are often painful and usually result from bacterial or yeast overgrowth, often triggered by underlying allergies. Common signs include head shaking, ear scratching, unusual discharge, sensitivity to touch, or a strong odour. Managing your pet's allergies is crucial to prevent recurring or severe infections.

If long-term ear care may help your dog, consult your vet or contact The Itchy Pet Vet Team.

Why does my dog lick its paws? 🐕

Contrary to common belief, dogs do not lick their paws merely out of boredom or habit. Paw licking is typically a response to discomfort, most frequently caused by pododermatitis, an inflammation of the paw skin often related to allergies and potentially worsened by secondary skin infections.

Detecting inflammation may be challenging in breeds with dense or long fur on their paws. Other possible causes for paw licking include nail bed infections, foreign bodies such as grass seeds, or arthritis affecting the paws. However, these conditions are generally obvious to your vet during a thorough physical examination.

If your dog is frequently licking its paws, this behaviour is indicative of an underlying problem requiring attention. It is advisable to schedule a consultation with your veterinarian or contact The Itchy Pet Vet for comprehensive dermatological evaluation.

I never see my dog scratch – could he still have allergies? 🐶

Yes – while many dogs do scratch at themselves when they have allergies, some dogs will rub their face and body or lick their body or paws, rather than scratch. Some dogs do nots eem to have much irritation at all but will have a “mousey or cheesy” smell, or dirty ears. Others just loose more hair than usual or get patchy moth-eaten coats.

All of these can be symptoms of inflammation in the skin or dermatitis and warrant
appropriate treatment from your veterinarian, or you can contact us at The Itchy Pet Vet for a detailed consultation.

What is the difference between The Itchy Pet Vet and my usual vet? 🐾

Your vet sees skin cases all the time, are very capable at helping your pet get relief from the problem at hand, but many clients become frustrated with recurrence of skin problems in their pets. Many vets are very busy and are not set up to be able to give your pet an extended assessment for their problem. It takes a considerable amount of time to assess a full clinical history and perform a thorough examination of your pet and then work out a detailed diagnostic plan to get an accurate diagnosis of the underlying cause of your pet’s skin condition.

At The Itchy Pet Vet, we emphasise getting rapid relief for your pet, then getting an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your pet’s skin condition. We make sure that you as the pet parent understands how the skin is affected and why, and then together we make a long-term plan to treat and manage your pet’s skin, tailored specifically to you and your pet.

If you would like to get to the bottom of your pet’s skin or ear problems, please feel free to reach out to The Itchy Pet Vet or speak to your vet about a referral.
