Dear Farming Clients,
🐄🐄
Although calving has recently Finished and mating is underway, now is the ideal time to consider your pregnancy testing requirements and schedule your scanning dates.
When to Scan
In cows, the optimal window to accurately age a pregnancy is between 42 and 90 days post-mating. We typically recommend two scanning sessions:
1. First Scan (January): To age early pregnancies and heifers. 🐮
2. Second Scan: To confirm non-pregnant cows and age late pregnancies. 🐄
Early age scans provide accurate calving dates to inform herd management decisions. Additionally, if you utilized a synchrony hormone program for your heifers, an early age scan six weeks post-AI enables accurate identification of heifers carrying AI replacements versus those that held to the bull.
Benefits of Early Age Scanning 🐮💞
- Improved Planning: Precise calving dates assist with wintering and transition management, allowing you to create separate winter mobs and draft accurately into your springer group. 💫
- Performance Tracking: Aged scanning allows us to calculate 3-week and 6-week in-calf rates to evaluate reproductive performance and guide planning for the following season.
- Early Detection and Treatment: Early scanning helps identify slipping fetuses, phantom cows, reproductive infections, cysts, twins, or fetal defects. Prompt identification allows for timely treatment (e.g., prostaglandin injections) to give cows another opportunity to cycle before the end of mating.
Please contact us to arrange your scanning dates for the upcoming season.
