Current outbreak of Kennel Cough in Taupo!
Kennel cough is a general term for infectious tracheobronchitis in dogs.
There are several different viruses and a bacteria similar to the one that causes whooping cough in humans that can cause coughing in dogs.
The kennel cough vaccine only protects against the Bordetella bacteria and the Parainfluenza virus.
It occurs in outbreaks and we are currently seeing an increased number of dogs with the cough.
To help protect your dog, ensure it has had a kennel cough vaccine in the last 6 months, especially if it goes to high risk areas such as the kennels, doggy daycare or dog parks.
The disease itself is usually self-limiting without treatment, but make an appointment to see the vet if your dog is coughing excessively, is unwell or has other underlying diseases that may affect its immunity.
Any coughing dogs should be isolated from other dogs for 10 β 14 days. If you bring your dog to the clinic with a cough or dry-retching symptoms, please remain in the car and let us know you have arrived.
