It's Animal Poison Prevention Month. Today, we're talking about common PLANTS that are harmful and even deadly to livestock.
Some of the worst offenders include:
โ ๏ธ ๐๐๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐๐ซ๐ฉ๐: Causes depression in adult cattle, followed by abortion late in pregnancy. The abortion may be followed by retention of the membranes. Deaths can occur. ๐๐ง๐ข๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ก๐๐๐ค๐๐ ๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ.
โ ๏ธ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฎ: Affects cattle and sometimes sheep. Theyโll usually leave Tutu alone unless theyโre short on grass. Symptoms are seen within 24-48 hours of ingestion. Drooling, nausea, excitement, convulsions, coma and death. Cattle may become aggressive, bloated and may regurgitate. ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฏ๐๐ญ ๐๐ฌ๐๐ฉ.
โ ๏ธ ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ซ: Highly toxic! Affects all livestock. Symptoms are Abdominal pain, trembling, weakness, drooling, frequent urination and bloody mucoid diarrhoea may be seen, but death can occur rapidly. ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐จ๐จ๐ซ.
โ ๏ธ ๐๐๐ค ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ฌ: Unripe acorns are the most dangerous. Symptoms first seen 2-3 days after ingestion and for up to 5 days after removal of acorns. Depression, anorexia, constipation, rumen stasis, severe abdominal pain and acorn remnants may be seen in the faeces. Death may occur. The milk from affected animals may taste bitter. All species are affected but cattle, sheep and deer seem to seek acorns out. ๐๐๐ญ ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐๐ญ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ซ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐๐.
โ ๏ธ ๐๐ก๐จ๐๐จ๐๐๐ง๐๐ซ๐จ๐ง: Toxic to livestock โ goats are especially keen on Rhodos. Symptoms are : Salivation, vomiting greenish froth, colic, constipation/diarrhoea, trembling, lying down, death. ๐๐ซ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐๐๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฏ๐๐ญ

Ideally, remove toxic plants from your property.

After storms, check grazing areas for branches and remove.

If youโre clipping or trimming shrubs from around the house, avoid feeding the clippings to animals unless youโre SURE the plant is non-toxic
