✨🐾 The goal isn't the longest coat possible—it's the healthiest coat possible 🐾✨

At this time of year, I often hear clients ask for a "winter cut" for their pup. Usually, what they mean is they would like to keep their dog's coat longer to help keep them warm.
While that sounds logical, it's unfortunately not quite how a dog's coat works.

A healthy, well-maintained coat insulates by trapping air close to the skin. When coats become too long, compacted, or matted, they can actually lose their insulating ability. Mats restrict airflow, trap moisture, and can make dogs less comfortable rather than warmer.

Sadly, many dogs return after winter with significant matting and need to be clipped much shorter than they would have if their coat had been regularly maintained throughout the season.

My job isn't to judge your choices—it's to educate, guide, and help you make the best decision for your dog's comfort, health, and coat condition. 🐾

✨🐾 Schnauzer S.O.S. 🐾✨

Leonard is a Miniature Schnauzer x Terrier, just one year old, and until today had never visited a grooming salon because his wonderful mum has done an amazing job keeping him looking snazzy.

As the seasons change, so does the coat. The undercoat begins to build up, tangles form, and before you know it, matting arrives. It all became a little overwhelming, so some professional help was needed.

Leonard had quite a few areas of matted undercoat, and Mum requested a fresh start - whatever I recommend. After taking a closer look, I decided that if Leonard would tolerate it, I would try to save as much of his coat as possible by carefully brushing out the worst of the matting.

🛁 Terrier-type coats can be tricky, with a harsh outer coat and a soft, fluffy undercoat. Being a mixed breed, Leonard had a combination of both throughout his coat. He enjoyed a thorough cleanse with Smith & Burton Soothing Shampoo, followed by a deeply hydrating conditioning treatment to restore moisture and help release the matting.
💨 Leonard wasn't a fan of the high-velocity dryer, so we worked around that. With both stand dryers running, I carefully brushed and combed through his coat until the comb glided smoothly from root to tip.
✂️ No clippers were needed today. Instead, he received a full scissor tidy to neaten him up while preserving his coat. The face was strictly off-limits—baby steps!

You look incredibly handsome, Leonard. Your mum is an absolute superstar for keeping on top of your coat and knowing when to ask for help.

Sunshine arrived ready for a freshen-up, and what a transformation! ✨

Today was all about restoring comfort, tidying the coat, and creating a balanced, polished style that suits this handsome little gentleman.

🛁 A luxurious bath with Smith & Burton Detox Shampoo helped lift away dirt and grime while leaving his coat fresh, clean, and beautifully soft. Sunshine thoroughly enjoyed the warm water and relaxing massage.
💨 Once clean, his coat was carefully blow-dried and brushed through to remove loose hair and tease out the small tangles that were beginning to form.
✂️ To finish, he enjoyed a full head-to-toe tidy-up, leaving him looking neat, comfortable, and oh-so-smart.

Sometimes one beautiful soul looks after another. This wee poppet hadn't seen a professional groomer for quite some time, so Aunty stepped in and said, "I'll sort it." ❤️

🛁 His coat was long and heavily matted, so a careful pre-clip was needed before his bath. Once mats get wet, they tighten and become even more uncomfortable. His coat was then thoroughly soaked with warm water and treated to a luxurious detox shampoo to deeply cleanse the skin and coat. A second hydrating shampoo followed, along with a nourishing conditioner to restore moisture and leave his coat feeling soft and healthy.
💨 A thorough blow dry for his body, with extra care taken to fluff dry his face and tail.
✂️ A full groom tidy-up, including his coat, face, feet, and sanitary areas for comfort, while gently removing any remaining small tangles and matting.

👑 What a transformation! This handsome little man is looking every bit the prince now that he can see again. He was an absolute superstar throughout the entire process, taking every stage in his stride and soaking up all the love and attention.

🐾✨ A Smooth Deshed for Bridget ✨🐾

Bridget is a Spitz-type breed, which means she has a beautiful double coat consisting of a soft, dense undercoat and a protective outer guard coat. Regular deshedding appointments help keep these coats healthy, comfortable, and looking their best. Areas around the hindquarters can be particularly prone to matting if not maintained.

🛁 Hydrate & Cleanse
Bridget's coat was feeling a little coarse and dry, so the focus was on restoring moisture. Her coat was thoroughly soaked to the skin and cleansed with Smith & Burton Soothing Shampoo, followed by a deep conditioning treatment to rehydrate and nourish the coat.

💨 Blow Out & Brush Through
Using a high-velocity dryer, we removed loose undercoat while drying and aerating the coat. The coat was then line brushed in sections to ensure there were no tangles or hidden snags.

✂️ Finishing Touches
A tidy-up of the feet, face, and sanitary areas completed Bridget's groom, leaving her comfortable, neat, and looking fabulous.

At 14 years young, Ziva has spent her entire life on the farm. As you can imagine, her coat collects all sorts of treasures, so Dad usually keeps her clipped short to make life a little easier.

Today, though, Dad booked Ziva in for a special pamper session — a lovely surprise for his wife, who was absolutely over the moon when she saw her!

🛁 Ziva enjoyed a luxurious bath with Smith & Burton Detox Shampoo to lift away dirt and grime from farm life, followed by a hydrating treatment to restore moisture to her coat. A nourishing conditioner was then brushed through her curls, leaving them soft, silky, and manageable.
💨 Being a true farm girl, Ziva wasn't bothered by the dryer one bit. Once completely dry, her coat was brushed out fluffy and soft, making her look just like a little lamb.
✂️ For her groom, she received a practical short clip all over, with a tidy face and shorter feet to help keep her clean and comfortable between grooms - as requested 😊

Just because the temperature drops doesn’t mean grooming stops! Winter coats need just as much care to stay healthy, warm, and comfortable.

🐾✨ Mr Bean ✨🐾

This young man was just a pup when Covid lockdown happened. He came into his family’s lives during a difficult time and has been lovingly groomed by mum ever since. Today was his first salon experience since he was little. 💛

🛁 Bathtime — I was warned that water on the face was a definite no thank you! I did wonder how I was going to wash that fluffy little face, but we got there using some alternative methods while Mr Bean kept a very close eye on the water at all times 👀
A luxurious Smith & Burton detox shampoo was massaged through his fluffy coat to remove dirt and grime, followed by a hydrating treatment to restore moisture and softness.
💨 Drying — Another big fat nope 😂
I gave it a try, but Mr Bean had already made his feelings very clear. Thankfully mum and I had discussed a backup plan beforehand, so we decided on a wet shave and let the sunshine through the salon window do the drying naturally ☀️
✂️ Grooming — A nice short cut all over to remove matting, tidy those hairy little feet, and freshen him up. A good “chop” around the face helped remove as much staining as possible, leaving him looking cute, cuddly, and feeling much more comfortable.

A confident little man in some ways, but understandably unsure about others after so long away from a salon environment. He tried his best today and that’s all I could ask for.

In Māori, “Irawaru” is the name of the first dog in Māori history ☺️ — a loyal companion, protector, and beloved member of the whānau. He is all of these things and more. Loyal eyes, a gentle nature, and a heart full of love — this handsome young man has already made himself right at home.

🛁 Bathtime — He loved the nice warm water and a relaxing massage with shampoo to cleanse and nourish his beautiful Cavoodle coat.
💨 Drying — A thorough dry and full brush-out to remove tangles and fluff up that gorgeous coat. Even small mats can tighten over time, so regular brushing and maintenance at home helps keep the coat healthy, comfortable, and easier to manage between grooms.
✂️ Grooming — A longer trim today to keep this sweet boy looking soft, fluffy, and cuddly while still keeping the coat tidy and practical. And of course… the ears and tail stay nice and full because mum absolutely adores them.

Such a lovely natured boy and an absolute pleasure to groom. I can’t wait to watch him grow into a confident little salon regular. 🐶✨
