At Barrowman Goodman Vets, we’re proud to offer laparoscopic spaying, an advanced, minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery that puts your pet’s comfort first. This technique uses a tiny camera and specialised instruments inserted through just two small incisions, allowing our team to remove the ovaries with exceptional precision and minimal tissue disruption.

Pets experience significantly reduced pain, smaller wounds, and a much faster recovery, with many returning to normal activity within just a day or two.

With winter fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to get your pets ready for the colder days ahead 🧣❄️
Here are a few quick tips to help keep them warm, healthy, and comfortable this season:
🐶 For your Dogs:
Dry Those Paws — Wipe after walks to prevent cracks and irritation.
Watch the Weight — Less exercise + same food = winter weight gain!
Boost Joint Support — Consider supplements if your dog slows down in the cold.
Watch for Coughs — Winter bugs spread easily; persistent coughing needs a vet check.

🐱 For your Cats:
Senior Support — Cold weather can flare arthritis in older cats.
Check outdoor cats at night — Bring them in during frosty evenings to prevent hypothermia.
Maintain regular grooming — Thick winter coats can mat easily without brushing.
Check the Car — Tap the bonnet; cats seek warmth under engines.

Enjoy a photo of our vet nurse Nikki's cat, Smooch, modelling excellent winter behaviour! keeping warm, safe, and comfortable. 😻

Meet Scarlett ❤️

She’s a beautiful Dobermann diagnosed with Von Willebrand’s disease, an inherited condition that increases her risk of bleeding. She needed desexing, and her local vet recommended a laparoscopic (keyhole) spey with us as a safer alternative to a traditional procedure 🩺✨

At Barrowman Goodman, we use a Ligasure device for all neuter procedures, from cat castrates through to bitch spays. This technology seals blood vessels before they are divided, significantly reducing bleeding risk.
Combined with the benefits of keyhole surgery, just two tiny incisions instead of one larger one, it offers a gentler, safer experience for our patients 🐾

Because Scarlett’s bleeding risk was higher than usual, she also received fresh frozen plasma and a specialised pre‑surgery injection to optimise her safety.
We’re delighted to share that her procedure went smoothly and her recovery was uneventful 🌟

A brave girl and a wonderful outcome 🐶💛

Who remembers the sweet stray we had in for rehoming?

Well… lucky Gordon, or affectionately known as Gordy, has well and truly landed on his feet with the most wonderful family.

His new owner shared this lovely update:

“Gordy (Gordon) is loving his new life with his two fur-siblings. He loves an adventure & has even come away on a family trip to the beach. Chasing butterflies, playing with his many toys, hiding in paper bags, boxes & lying in the sun. Gordy has settled in perfectly 🥰 Far from his previous life as a street cat 🐾”

Seeing him so content and well‑loved is exactly the ending we hoped for 💗

Big upgrade for our patients! 🐾✨

Here at Barrowman Goodman Vets, we’ve just welcomed a brand new Mindray ventilator into the clinic and we’re pretty excited about it!

This clever piece of tech helps us keep your pets extra safe under anaesthesia by supporting or even taking over their breathing if needed. Sometimes, during general anaesthesia a patient's breathing can become shallow or even stop. In these situations, the Mindray can take over and breathe for the pet, ensuring that they continue to get enough oxygen.

The ventilator allows us to carefully control things like breath size, pressure, and rate, tailoring support to each individual patient—whether they’re tiny, elderly, or unwell. It also continuously monitors breathing and lung function, giving our team real-time feedback throughout the procedure.

Even better? Its high precision means we can often use less anaesthetic gas, which is gentler on your pet.

Safer procedures, smoother recoveries, and one very cool machine—wins all round! 🙌

Have you noticed any new lumps on your pet recently?

We would recommend that you get them checked out. The majority will be benign skin lumps such as warts or sebaceous cysts. Small, soft lumps under the skin are often fatty lumps called lipomas. However, sometimes a lump that feels like a fatty lump can actually be something else.

At Barrowman Goodman Vets we like to sample any lump with a fine needle and have a look under our microscope to confirm what the lump is. We can diagnose fatty lumps easily by this method but if we are not sure we can also get the opinion of a specialist pathologist in Hamilton.

In this case, Dr Anna Goodman sampled a small soft lump on a dog, that felt like a lipoma. But it wasn’t, it is actually a Mast Cell Tumour. The mast cells are the interesting “fried egg” like cells that stain well under the microscope in the image. We need to surgically remove this mast cell tumour with wide margins and get its grade tested at the lab.

This is a great example of how you can’t diagnose what a lump is by just feeling it without sampling it!
