This winter has really shown us just how important our volunteers are, and how much we need a warm, safe, and comfortable place for them to stay.

The wet, wild weather has brought extra challenges and a huge workload at Hidden Valley Farm Sanctuary. Our animals still need us, whatever the weather, and having volunteers able to stay with us through winter would make such a difference.

So we've found an opportunity to create Hope Rest, a warm, insulated volunteer cabin where people can stay, rest, and be on the property each day ready to help.

Our goal is $15,000 to purchase, move, and set up the cabin.

💚 We're asking our Hidden Valley family to help us get the campaign started.

Givealittle requires three donations before we can promote our campaign on their platform. Who will be one of our first three supporters? Every donation, big or small, will help us take that first step.

And if you can't donate, you can still make a huge difference.

🙏 Please share this post, tell your friends, family, and workmates about Hope Rest, a volunteer hub, and help us spread the word.

Sometimes the greatest gift isn't money; it's helping the right people hear our story.

Together, we can create a place to rest, a place to learn, and a place to make a difference.

A new volunteer and work experience team at Hidden Valley Farm NZ. I love teaching people new tricks and ways and seeing that moment when they get it.

The horses are enjoying the extra attention and the spring in the air despite the crazy windy weather here I'm feeling quite excited for the new season.

A super strong wind has added to our week of strong winds where carnage has been left in its wake. Heavy things have been thrown around smashed into my car breaking the back window and damaging the back of the car, trees have snapped and fallen down. Windows meant for a greenhouse have been blown metres and smashed into the ground. It's been pretty mind-blowing. We're so lucky nothing was broken or damaged that isn't replaceable and all the animals are safe.

Let's hope that's the last of it for now.

LOCAL MOTUEKA SPOTLIGHT 🌊 - Terri, Hidden Valley Farm & Sanctuary

Some people find their calling. Terri was born to it.

As a kid in the UK she wasn't at ballet class, she was on the ground finding beetles. Her uncle gave her a voucher for a pony ride when she was about five, she then got on a little Shetland called Noddy, and that was it. Farming was already in her blood through her mum's side, and Terri went on to study agriculture and equine studies at college, working on farms all over before she worked out exactly what kind of life she wanted to build.

Then she met Jim. Engaged within six weeks, married within a year, and what was meant to be a trip to Australia turned into a trip around the world.

New Zealand wasn't even the plan. They hitchhiked their way round, and one of the strangers who picked them up took them home to his parents' farm in Marahau. A few days later, doing the Abel Tasman Track, an earthquake hit, then a huge storm washed out their campsite. The farm owners took them in, they stayed weeks helping clean up, and without knowing it, Terri did her first ever WWOOFing stint.

Years and two kids later, after England and France, they decided to give the other side of the world a go. Terri's she says she doesn't hold onto words - she holds onto feelings. So when they drove into Motueka she turned to Jim and said she had a feeling they'd been here before. They stopped the car. They never really left.

It turned out the paddock she recognised was right by the old farm that took them in years earlier. From there life took Terri in two directions that somehow both make total sense for her. One became Hidden Valley Farm & Sanctuary, home now to around 70 rescued animals up on Takaka Hill. The other became The Dream Maker NZ, where she's a registered celebrant marrying couples in some of the wildest, most beautiful backdrops in the Tasman region, no two ceremonies the same.

Rescuing animals and marrying people in love might seem like two different jobs. For Terri they're the same thing. Showing up for whoever needs her, wherever that happens to be.

If you've never been up to the farm, put it on the list. And if you can't make it up the hill, there's still a way to help.
