🐄 Calving is slowing down… so what’s next? Mating! 🐂❤️

As calving starts to slow down on most dairy farms, it’s time to turn our attention to the next big job on the farming calendar — getting cows and heifers ready for mating. 🐄

A few key things we can be doing now to set the herd up for a successful mating season:

🔎 Metrichecking
Uterine infections can delay cycling and impact reproductive performance. Identifying and treating issues early can help get cows back on track.

🩸 Blood testing for ketones & trace elements
High ketones can be a sign that feed supply isn’t meeting the demands of milk production. Trace elements are also important for reproductive health. Knowing where your herd is at means we can address any issues before mating begins.

🔥 Heat detection
Keeping an eye on cycling post-calving helps us identify non-cycling cows early, giving us more time to investigate and intervene if needed.

🎯 Good pre-mating management = cows getting back in-calf sooner = more days in milk!

🐄💉 KEEP LEPTO OUT OF YOUR HERD! 💉🐄

Leptospirosis (Lepto) is widespread and can be a serious risk on farm. Cattle can carry and spread the disease, while rodents and other pests can also play a role in transmission. 🐀⚠️

The good news? A consistent vaccination programme is one of the best ways to reduce the risk. 🛡️

💉 Our recommended calf vaccination programme:

📅 First vaccination: From 6 weeks of age
📅 Second vaccination: At 12 weeks of age

👉 To make things easier to manage and keep track of, wait until the youngest calves are 6 weeks old, then vaccinate the group from that point.

🐮 Yearlings & heifers: Vaccinate again as recommended. The following season is a great opportunity to align your herd vaccination programme when your R2s join the milking herd.

🏡 Lifestyle & beef blocks: The same approach applies! Keeping all animals on the property covered is an important part of reducing the risk of Lepto.

🛡️ Other ways to minimise Lepto risk:

🐀 Cover stored feed to reduce contamination from rodents and other pests.

💧 Avoid areas of pooled or stagnant water where Lepto bacteria can survive.

🥾 Wear appropriate PPE when handling animals or potentially contaminated areas.

💉 Keep a consistent vaccination programme for ALL animals on your property.

Calf scours? Don’t just guess — test! 🐄💩

Calf scours can have a number of different causes, and knowing what you’re dealing with can make a big difference when it comes to treatment, prevention and managing the rest of the calves.

That’s why we recommend using the FASTest® D4T bovine test when investigating calf diarrhoea.

🧪 One test checks for four important causes of calf scours:
🔹 Cryptosporidium
🔹 Rotavirus
🔹 Coronavirus
🔹 E. coli K99 (F5)

The test uses a faecal sample and gives results in around 10 minutes, allowing us to identify potential infectious causes quickly and make more informed decisions about treatment and hygiene measures.

And because co infections can occur, testing can give us a much clearer picture than simply treating based on symptoms alone.

Last week we had the lovely group from Brownies Morrinsville come in for a visit! 💕 We loved showing them around the clinic, introducing them to a few of the things we do behind the scenes, and answering all their curious questions. 🐶🐱🐄

We love welcoming the younger generation into the clinic — because who knows, we might have an aspiring vet in the making! 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️🐾

🐐✨ Princess and King Richard came to visit! ✨🐐

Princess and King Richard the goats popped in to see Dr Oscar during the week for their disbudding and vaccinations — and they were absolute little superstars! 💕

After a quick weigh-in 📏⚖️, they were all sorted with their disbudding and Covexin® vaccination, ready to head home and get back to being the King and princess of the paddock. 👑🐐

All tucked up safely in their crate and ready for home! 🥰
