Welcome to Paparoa Riding Group!

I tried to get this off the ground many years ago & while there was plenty of enthusiasm for it, it never actually eventuated as no one was keen to organize anything themselves.

There's many more horsey folk in the area now so I'm giving this another go to see if we can get it to fly...

The aim is inclusion of all without being affiliated with any official bodies (e.g. Pony Club) & without a committee & loads of rules. Ride bitless, ride ba****ck or don't ride at all, the ONLY RULES are that you wear a helmet when you're mounted on public grounds, you're under control & you promote exemplary horsemanship, putting the horse first at all times.

This is an opportunity for EVERYONE to get actively involved & organise get togethers & things you'd like to do or try.

Maybe you've always wanted to try polocrosse? Or have a go at jousting? Perhaps Working Equitation or Cowboy Challenge floats your boat? Or maybe, like me, you have a newly started horse that could do with some mileage in quiet company?

We've been SO spoilt having Morgan Chandler-Bruce Equestrian here!

Not only has Morgan done a fabulous job of setting 5 x wild horses up for domestic life, she's also been exceptionally generous with her camera! Thanks to Morgan for allowing Stevie-Raye Te Atawhai Ball to capture another milestone for Maru & I.

Although Maru has worn a saddle many times since he was mustered in 2018, I've only ever ridden him ba****ck. Our quick Sunday ride was our debut 'under saddle'.

I can confirm that riding in a saddle is FAR more comfortable for my pelvis than ba****ck on 'his wideness'. It's also much easier to get off! 😅

Fitness is our next goal (for both of us)! 💪 We're working on replacing the broodmare bod with a Summer bod. He'll always be built for comfort rather than speed, but he could at least look a little less like he just ate all his herd mates! 🫣🤭

It's been so much fun having Morgan Chandler-Bruce Equestrian & Cameron Marryatt hanging out here for the last 6 weeks! I'm going to miss their motivation & moral support when they take their horses home at the end of the week.

I'm also going to really miss the stunning photos of Maru! 🤩 Even with his Dad bod, he's a handsome chap, inside & out! He spends a lot of his time muttering, "FML" under his breath, but as long as adventures have snacks, he's cooperative, if not always willing. 😅

We had another fun adventure out, baby-sitting the Kaimanawa kids on their first float ride & beach excursion. All four of them were absolute superstars! 🤩 They're an absolute credit to Morgan, Cameron & Stevie-Raye! 👏

FACT! 😰

With 142 wild horses supposed to be targeted for removal during the mid-winter muster (to reach the 2024 target of 230), many people have been asking for clarity on whether excess horses will be culled if enough homes aren’t found.

IF A MINIMUM OF 50 HORSES ARE REHOMED from the upcoming muster then the answer is no. While some leniency for the herd is a huge win, not meeting the ideal number of 142 will add to next years numbers and culls may be revisited going forward if the herd population isn’t able to be maintained from rehoming.

This is the time to be applying for a horse, and over the next few weeks we’ll be doing everything we can to find 50 horses homes, which by default will save almost triple that 🙏
