Why does my pet need to fast before an anaesthetic?

It's one of the most common questions we're asked, and the answer is all about keeping your pet as safe as possible.

When a pet is under a general anaesthetic, the muscles that normally protect their airway are relaxed. If there's food in their stomach, there's a risk they could vomit or regurgitate. By fasting your pet before their procedure, we help reduce this risk and make their anaesthetic as safe as possible.

Don't worry, they won't go hungry for long! Once your pet is awake and alert, we offer them a small snack to make sure they're feeling well before they head home. You can then feed them a small meal at home that evening.

If your pet accidentally sneaks a snack before their appointment, please let us know. It doesn't always mean their procedure can't go ahead, but it's important that we know so we can make the safest decision for them.

Thank you for following our fasting instructions, it plays an important role in helping your furry friend have a safe and smooth anaesthetic.

Meet Goose!

Goose popped in to see us for a quick weigh-in while his parents picked up his regular worming tablets. Keeping up with routine worming is an important part of helping young puppies stay happy and healthy as they grow.

These little visits are also a fantastic opportunity to help puppies build positive associations with the vet clinic. Coming in for treats, cuddles, a quick weigh-in, or even just to say hello helps desensitise them to the sights, sounds, smells, and friendly faces they'll encounter during future visits.

Starting these positive experiences early can make a huge difference, helping your puppy grow into a confident adult who feels much more relaxed when it's time for health checks or treatment.

Great job, Goose, you were such a superstar and growing in confidence!

🦷 Fresh, clean teeth and a healthier smile!

This lovely pup visited us for a dental procedure, where we performed a thorough scale and polish to remove built-up plaque and tartar. Regular dental cleanings help keep your dog's mouth healthy, freshen their breath, and reduce the risk of painful dental disease.

As part of this dental procedure, we also took dental X-rays to check below the gumline for any hidden problems that can't be seen during a visual examination.

Keeping your pet's teeth clean is an important part of their overall health. If your furry friend has bad breath or it's been a while since their last dental check, give us a call to book them in!

Today is National Check the Chip Day, take a minute to make sure your pet's microchip is registered with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR) and that your contact details are up to date. https://www.animalregister.co.nz/

It only takes a few minutes, but it could make all the difference if your pet ever goes missing.

Big patient, big cuddles!

This gentle giant visited us for his desexing procedure. Despite his impressive size, he was an absolute sweetheart and handled everything like a champion.

Desexing has many benefits, including helping to prevent certain health issues, reducing the risk of unwanted litters, and supporting your pet's long-term wellbeing.

Our team made sure our big friend was comfortable every step of the way, and we're happy to report he did wonderfully. We wish him a smooth recovery and look forward to seeing him back for a happy, healthy check-up!

What a special day at the clinic!

Yesterday, our team performed a C-section, safely delivering 8 beautiful, healthy puppies into the world.

With a litter that size, it really does take a village! While our vet focused on mum, our amazing nurses were busy keeping each puppy warm, clearing their airways, stimulating them to breathe, and making sure everyone got the very best start to life.

A huge shout-out to our incredible nursing team for their hard work, teamwork, and dedication. We're so proud of the care they provide, especially during moments like these. 💙

Mum and all eight pups are doing well, and we couldn't be happier for their owners. Welcome to the world, little ones!

You may have seen posts about Peaches and the Peachitos over the past few months.

Peaches gave birth here at our clinic under the constant watchful eye of Brett, who spent many long hours caring for her before she went into labour, helping her through the birth, and making sure both mum and her puppies got the very best start.

One of the most rewarding parts of our job is seeing these little ones come back through our doors. Today, one of the Peachitos returned with his new family for his booster vaccination and microchipping, and we couldn't believe how much he has grown, not just in size, but in confidence too! Seeing him thriving in his new home truly made our day.

Still searching for their forever families 🖤🤍

These puppies, who were born at the clinic on May 4th and spent their first week here, are still looking for loving homes.

Interestingly, out of the entire litter of 8, the only three black and white puppies are also the only ones still waiting to be adopted.

Meet Vader, Satine and Jyn. At almost 3 months of age, they're healthy, happy, well-socialised puppies who are ready to begin the next chapter of their lives.

Their DNA results are in, revealing a beautiful mix of Border Collie, Australian Cattle Dog, and a few surprise breeds, making them intelligent, loyal and active companions for the right families.

Winter & Arthritis Awareness

As the colder months settle in, you may notice your older furry family members starting to slow down. While it's easy to think they're "just getting old," these changes can often be signs of arthritis.

Arthritis is a common condition that causes inflammation and pain in the joints, making everyday activities more difficult and uncomfortable. Pets are experts at hiding pain, so the signs can be subtle.

Keep an eye out for changes such as:
- Slowing down or tiring more quickly on walks
- Hesitating to jump onto the couch, bed, or into the car
- Stiffness, especially after resting
- Sleeping more than usual or being less interested in play
- Difficulty getting up or lying down
