Birds are still being accepted at Massey Vets, however there is increased biosecurity in place.
Biosecurity such as wearing PPE, asking for information on the phone or outside the building before admission all help reduce spread and manage potential risk.

Here is Dr Brett Gartrell, Director of Wildbase, speaking about the second confirmed case of avian Influenza.

A second bird flue case has been confirmed in New Zealand, and this time it has infected a native bird, the Kahu, a swap harrier hawk. The bird was sent to Massey University's Wildbase Research centre after being found extremely ill. Professor Brett Gartell spoke to Lisa Owen.

⚠️ Avian Influenza (HPAI H5N1) Confirmed in New Zealand ⚠️

The first case of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) has been confirmed in New Zealand after a wild seabird found near Wellington tested positive. Authorities have advised that the risk to the general public remains low, and there is currently no evidence of spread to poultry in New Zealand.

This strain of avian influenza is a serious viral disease affecting wild and domestic birds overseas and can also infect mammals, including cats, dogs, marine mammals, and cattle.

If you see an unwell wild bird:

❌ Do not touch or move it
📸 If safe to do so, take a photo or short video from a distance
📞 Report it to the MPI Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66

MPI advises reporting groups of three or more sick or dead wild birds.

🐈‍⬛🐕Advice for cat and dog owners

To help reduce the risk of infection: 🏠 Keep cats indoors where possible
🐕 Keep dogs on a lead around areas with wild birds
🐦 Prevent pets from hunting, scavenging, or interacting with sick or dead birds

If you have concerns about your pets or birds, please contact your local Vet Services clinic for advice.

🌟 Matariki Public Holiday Closure 🌟
Kia ora koutou,
Please note that Massey Vets will be closed on Friday 10 July in observance of the Matariki Public Holiday.
🐾 Our Emergency team will remain available to support our clients and those of our partner practices throughout the holiday.
Matariki is a special time in Aotearoa to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present, and look with hope towards the future. It is a time for reflection, gratitude, and coming together as a community.
Here at Massey Vets, we will be taking a moment to remember the beloved pets we have farewelled over the past year, while also celebrating the many happy moments we've shared with our patients and their families—the recoveries, the new beginnings, the wagging tails, the purrs, and the special bonds that make our work so rewarding.
As we reflect on the year that has been, we are grateful for the trust our clients place in us and for the privilege of caring for your animals through every stage of their lives.
We wish you and your whānau a meaningful, restful, and hopeful Matariki.
✨ Closed: Friday 10 July
✨ Reopening as normal: Monday 13 July
Ngā mihi,

We’ve very pleased to share this Massey news item about some scholarship funding we (the School
Of Veterinary Science) secured from the MSD Global Impact Fund for a significant contribution to five BVSc5 students this year. Hoping we may be able to secure similar funding for another couple of years also. Massive thanks to our local MSD folk Penny Mehrtens and Pauline Calvert for laying the groundwork and encouraging us to apply.

Following Tāwharau Ora School of Veterinary Science’s successful application to the Merck, Sharp and Dohme (MSD) Global Impact Fund, five veterinary students have received scholarships worth over NZ$8,000 each to support costs associated with their final year of training.
