Sun production is just as important for our pets as it is for us, especially if those pets are white.

This absolute sweetheart loves to lounge in the sun but overtime this has caused damage to her skin. Alongside her dedicated owners, we're working hard to manage some skin changes caused by solar dermatitis.

Starting sun protection early for white pets can help to prevent these changes from occurring. Some good sun smart rules are;
πŸ’š Wearing a protective sunsuit while out and about. Bromelli sun suits for Dogs have fantastic options.
πŸ’š Staying out of the sun during the high UV periods. That often means early morning and late night walks.
πŸ’š Sun creams like the Dermoscent range that is especially designed for animals.
πŸ’š Keeping indoor beds out of the sun because skin damage can happen through the windows.

Yes these rules still apply now it's winter.

Recently our specialist, Helen, has traveled the country talking to veterinarians about how to manage ear disease.

For successful flea control we need to follow the πŸ’« golden rules πŸ’«

1. All pets need protection. Cats and dogs are hosts to the same flea species, this means fleas can jump between the two.
2. Alongside protecting all pets, it's important that all the pets are treated at the same time. This ensures there is no break in the flea life cycle.
3. Check the timing in your chosen product and make sure they are applied at the right time. Also check any information about how soon after applying flea prevention your pet can be washed.
4. Pets need year round prevention. Even when it's chilly outside, many pets send their time inside our cozy houses.
5. If you find fleas on your pet, there's more in the environment. Vacuuming and flea bombs are helpful tools to get the numbers under control .
6. If there is an environmental outbreak, be patient. Getting ontop of flea numbers can take time.

Our team are always there to help with any questions

The warm weather may have disappeared but the fleas have not.

It's important to keep up with flea control year round, not just over the summer months.
Stay tuned for our next post on the golden flea control rules β˜€οΈ

We were honoured to meet Katari, a Squirrel Monkey from Wellington Zoo Te Nukuao. Katari's care team had noticed he was having some hayfever like symptoms and after consultation between the Zoo veterinary team at Te Kōhanga The Nest and our specialist Helen, it was decided that Katari would be a good candidate for intradermal allergy testing. Fitting our panel of 59 allergens wasn't easy on such a small body, but our team managed and Katari had some beautiful reactions. The Zoo veterinary team, Katari's care team and Helen are working closely to manage his allergies and keep him happy and healthy.
