Did you know your pet’s microchip needs to be registered to help bring them home? 🐾

A microchip is only the first step. If your pet’s chip isn’t registered, or your contact details aren’t up to date, it can make it much harder to reunite you if they ever go missing.

The New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR) is New Zealand’s national companion animal microchip register. It links your pet’s microchip number with your contact details, helping vets, councils, shelters and other authorised users identify lost pets and reconnect them with their families.

Whether you have a new puppy or kitten, or your pet has been part of your family for years, it’s worth checking their details are correct.

A few weeks ago we did a Gastropexy surgery on the lovely Moon. A gastropexy is a preventative surgery that helps reduce the risk of GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus) also known as bloat. Because Moon is a deep chest large breed dog she is more at risk of getting GDV.

GDV is a life-threatening emergency where a dog's stomach fills with gas and twists, cutting off blood supply. Without immediate treatment, it can be fatal.

A gastropexy works by permanently attaching the stomach to the body wall, helping prevent it from twisting. While it doesn't stop a dog from bloating, it greatly reduces the risk of the dangerous stomach rotation.

If you own a deep-chested breed, this is a procedure worth considering at the time of desexing. Speak to our team to find out if it's the right option for your dog.

Biggie is a very handsome Burmese stud boy from Cairistona Burmese who visited the clinic for a cardiac screening. These routine heart checks help identify any inherited heart conditions and are an important part of responsible breeding, helping to maintain the long-term health and wellbeing of the breed.

🐣 Easter Reminder for Pet Owners: Chocolate & Dogs Don’t Mix!🍫🐕🚫

With Easter around the corner, many homes are filled with delicious treats like chocolate eggs and bunnies. While these are fun for us, they can be very dangerous for dogs! ⚠️

We noticed a large number of our patients visited the emergency vet last year on Christmas and Boxing day due to chocolate ingestion. With Easter coming up, here are a few safety tips to help keep your furry friends safe and avoid an unexpected trip to the after-hours vet while we are closed over the Easter weekend.”

• Keep Easter eggs, chocolate bunnies, and candy well out of reach of dogs.
• Remind children not to share their treats with pets
• Check gardens carefully for any missed hidden chocolate if you’re hosting an Easter egg hunt. During the hunt it is advised to lock your dog away somewhere safe untill all the chocolate has been found.

Chocolate has chemicals dogs can’t process. Those chemicals build up and will overstimulate their heart and nervous system, which may cause vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, a racing heart, seizures, and in severe cases, death🐕🍫🚫

⚠️ If your dog eats chocolate, contact your veterinarian immediately. The sooner treatment begins, the better the outcome.⚠️
