Dog owners! Do you need advice on trimming your pet's nails? 🐕️ We know it can sometimes be a daunting task, and many dogs (and owners!) are nervous when it comes to getting this done.

We've created a helpful guide explaining how to know if your dog's nails need trimming, important things to be aware of, and when to seek veterinary advice ❤️ Understanding the anatomy of the dog's nail is crucial in ensuring you can do this safely (avoiding the inner 'quick'), while keeping your dog happy and healthy.

🐾 A Winter Appeal from SPCA Manawatū 🐾

Winter is here, and we know times are tough. With power bills rising and supermarket costs adding up, many whānau in our community are finding it harder to keep on top of everything, including caring for their beloved pets.

At SPCA Manawatū, we understand that life gets tough sometimes. A simple helping hand can help keep animals at home with the people who love them most. Prevention is everything and with your help, we can support animals in our community before they ever need to come through our doors.

We're currently collecting:

🐶 Pet food (dogs & cats)
🐶 Blankets & pet beds
🐶 Large Kennels (waterproof and in good condition)
🐶 Flea & worm treatments
🐶 Dog jackets (especially medium to large sizes)

These simple items can make a real difference to families doing their best to care for their fur babies this winter.

If you can spare anything at all, please drop your donations to our Centre at 93 Napier Road, Palmerston North, between 10am and 3pm, Monday to Saturday.

Let's come together as a community and give the animals of Manawatū a winter helping hand.

Are you organised, and passionate about helping animals? Then we need YOU! 🙏

SPCA’s annual street appeal, Fill the Bucket, will take place across Aotearoa again this year on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 2026, and we’re beginning our search for Volunteer Area Coordinators.

Funds raised from this appeal help us continue our vital work to save the lives of thousands of animals each year ❤️ You can join the amazing community of supporters by becoming a Volunteer Area Coordinator in your region. You can do this independently, or join up with a friend and double the fun!

We’re looking for people who can take on a leading role, be a friendly face for the volunteer street collectors, attend a training session beforehand, and commit to the two full days in October. Keen to be a part of the team? 🐱🐶 Email us at [email protected].

Got a little extra land? Perhaps you live on a farm or a lifestyle block, or know someone who does? SPCA needs foster homes for farm animals! 🐎🐏

We can't emphasise enough just how important our foster homes are 🙏 Whether the animals need space to grow and gain strength, or recover from neglect or mistreatment, having a safe foster home is a key part in their journey to adoption.

Anita is one of our treasured farm fosterers.

"I love animals, and we have plenty of space since moving to a lifestyle block in South Auckland," Anita says. "When I realised we could help out by fostering, I decided to sign up.

"At this stage we had four alpaca of our own. I fostered Cosworth the alpaca, and he needed meds to help him with some of his ailments. It was so lovely to see his health improve.

"I totally recommend fostering. The SPCA team are there to support you if you have any questions or concerns, and they check in regularly." 🩵
