🐴 What’s That?! Wednesday: The Placenta & Hippomane 🥔

The placenta is an amazing part of pregnancy and plays a huge role in keeping the foal healthy while it develops. It provides the foal with oxygen and nutrients and removes waste products throughout pregnancy.

After foaling, we always check the placenta carefully to make sure it is complete and that no pieces have been left behind inside the mare. A retained piece of placenta can become a serious problem, so this is an important part of our post-foaling care.

Sometimes we also find a brown, solid-looking lump sitting within the placenta which is called a Hippomane!

The hippomane forms inside the fluid-filled part of the placenta during pregnancy. It is made up of concentrated material from the allantoic fluid, including cells, proteins and minerals. They can vary in size and colour, but are often brown and quite firm, resembling a little potato! 🥔

Their exact purpose isn't completely understood, but finding one is generally completely normal and isn't a cause for concern.

So, although it might look a little strange, this ‘placental potato’ is just another fascinating part of the foaling process! 🐴🩷

An early season update for our awesome clients:

This season we are going to have standard times to drop off or pick up your mares and foals as follows:

Monday-Friday

10.30-11.30am
2.00-3.00pm

We are also going to try to use these time windows for anyone wanting to visit their mares and foals.

There are a few reasons for these changes:

🐴 To help us manage work flow. It’s busy here now! Busier than I ever imagined! It’s more efficient for us to have set times so other jobs aren’t interrupted, and it means we can make sure we are organised and someone is ready and waiting when you arrive.

🐴 For workplace heath and safety. We are liable for your safety while you’re on our farm, and want to make sure you’re safe while you’re here. Horses are horses and we don’t want any accidents to happen. We can’t have people unattended in paddocks with horses, and this will help us manage this liability.

🐴While we live and breath our business, it’s also our home and we need some down time too. This means we are asking that weekends are avoided for pickups, drop offs, and visits other than people coming to see their brand new foals, which we will always accommodate any day of the week.

All arrivals, departures and visits will be booked through the usual channels. We will just be trying to accommodate them during the times above.

We have a handful of foaling spaces available this season, with our largest number of foalings booked for this time of the year since we began.
