🐾💙 This week is Vet Nurse and Vet Tech Awareness Week! 💙🐾

We are celebrating our nurses and techs - they are fantastic people who do a HUGE amount of work (much of which is largely behind the scenes).

From anaesthetics and surgery to patient monitoring, hospital care, bandaging, cleaning, cuddling nervous patients, talking to nervous owners, supporting our vets, heading out on farm, disbudding, teatsealing, running FEC tests, and much more!

Our nurses and techs are the people who keep our clinics moving, and we couldn’t do what we do without them!

One thing we love about vet med is that everyday is different and we are trained to expect the unexpected. That’s exactly what happened on Monday when Carmen was required to examine a unicorn for the first time. It turns out the unicorn was suffering from ‘school holiday induced caffeine overload’ and we are pleased to report that after a short detox she had made a full recovery. Thanks to Leigh for brightening our day.

It’s been nice to see the sun this last week - let’s hope this fine weather continues as Spring really is a marathon. Below are a few pics to illustrate a some animal health reminders/notes:

*this week we have seen a few Theileria cases on various farms. These show up as lethargic animals, often losing weight and may have breathing issues. A FANI check is a good visual test to do with any animals you are concerned about.

*calf scours are proving to be a real challenge on many properties this year. Rotavirus is the main issue to date, but we are also seeing issues with crypto. A simple test will help identify the cause and therefore the best treatment plan

* pony people - with the grass starting to move, be aware that the increase the risk of laminitis in older ponies. Now is also a good time to do faecal sample to see if your pony needs worming and also test for Se.

*Stainless steel soap - lets be real, Spring comes with some bad smells that get in your skin and seem to stay forever. Along with washing with cold water, stainless steel soap is a game changer to remove bad odours. Even using the back of a dessert spoon on your arms will help. If Carmen is on your farm in the next few weeks - feel free to ask her how she discovered this, it’s a great story 😂

Are you missing your furry friend? We have had an elderly cat brought into our Pahiatua clinic this morning. He doesn't have a collar or microchip, has a white chest and white socks on his front and back legs. He was found in the Halls Road area of Pahiatua.
