Charlotte and Ember (in the back). Charlotte will likely stay stunted from all the health challenges she faced at birth, but she’s doing great now. It’s something I always mention when the topic of “mini Highlands” comes up. More often than not, those animals being marketed as purebred minis are simply calves that ended up smaller because of a rough start, poor nutrition, or a mother who struggled to produce enough milk.

The truth is, a Highland’s size is shaped by genetics, health, and nutrition. Some calves will grow into big, robust cattle, while others like Charlotte stay small simply because of circumstances beyond their control. That doesn’t make them more valuable, and it’s not a trait that should be bred for.

As much as I love giving the sick ones a chance, the reality is they wouldn’t survive in nature. Breeding from the weak or stunted doesn’t improve the breed in the long run. Highland cattle are known for their hardiness, and that’s what should be preserved. Charlotte may never be prized breeding stock… but she can be a cute little pasture ornament.

Meet Millie, this Buxom lass is an 8 year old who unfortunately has scanned empty the last 2 years after she had calving difficulty in 2022. She is quiet & friendly & loves a good bum scratch (see earlier videos on the page). As we can't find the heart to dehorn her we would love to see her go to a forever home that understands she might never get in calf again.
