Oko’s Place

Oko’s Place Oko’s Place offers anyone interested in horses the chance to learn about them in a safe and empathetic way.

We offer riding, groundwork lessons and pre-school pony play time. Oko's place doesn't use bits, whips, spurs or hard kicks as teaching tools.

This is very true. They just don’t throw their head around or fight the rider as much without a bit in their mouth 💓 There was a bridle-less competition in England recently which is where the bridle-less clip is from 💓

Today we are taking my dear pony to what is hopefully his new home for a while. Chase is a free bird and isn’t keen on arena work - he loves running on the beach, through the forest, and jumping. Now Elina is too big, I think he’s bored here.

A suitable home has come up for him (wee boy with a love for adventure and a shared distaste for arena work). He will come back here once he’s finished having fun with his new friends - I imagine he and I will sit quietly together in our shared retirement one day ❤️ In the meantime - Have fun out there Chase!

This wee man’s Mum kindly offered for me to use these pics as an example of a Pony Playtime session. He loves this game and Oko could care less about a child waving a net and ball around - these games are done to create balance and to keep busy minds focused - future polo players perhaps 🤔

Today Marc went from having a jump in the morning (photo) to giving his very first lesson as an employee of Oko’s Place this afternoon for a lovely wee 8yo girl who… wants to be a show jumper! Marc was hoof perfect and I can see he will be a great teacher ❤️
Today’s family are real animal lovers and just the type of people we want to share our style of horsemanship with. Beautiful day and it looks like the sun is sticking around for a while 😊

I want to say a big thank you to the lovely families who come and join us at Oko’s Place! Im not into taking pictures of children to post online so from the outside it probably looks like we’re not doing much, but that’s ok we’re having a lot of fun. The ponies say thanks too 🏵️

Such a stunning evening and 9 days of gorgeous sunshine coming up I hear! It might be a lovely time to come and meet some cool ponies and enjoy some pretty views ❤️

Welcome to the new followers of Oko’s Place fb page! Please feel free to ask any questions or offer suggestions for services we could add - we’re thinking birthday parties could be fun?🤔

After a few weeks of operation and gentle observation we have make a couple of changes:

1) We love offering the full hour sessions to our fun keen-pre schoolers and now we have Marc the pony on our team we will be able to host 2 children per Pony Play Time rather than the original idea of having 5 or so children per session. We are seeing such lovely benefits to the wee ones in their balance and coordination - and in their enjoyment - we dont want to reduce their riding time by bringing in too many children at once. We will have 2 Pony Play Time sessions per day 9.30am and 11.30am

2) My (Josie’s) original idea for Oko’s Place was to offer a place for foster children to come and spend time with horses. After many months of communication with a Foster Care Agency - who have offered a lot of encouragement and verbal support we would now like to offer Foster children the opportunity to come and learn about horses for free. Please share with any foster family who you think might benefit from this interaction.

I want to thank the lovely families who have become regular visitors and have given Oko and Dia in particular an awesome new job. We are humbled by your support and look forward to continuing sharing our horses and space with you all 🙏 ❤️ 🦄

This is Marc. One of the coolest pony’s out there and Oko’s biological uncle! He doesn’t belong to us but has been Elina’s personal pony for a couple of years. Well, today his owner agreed to let him stay on after Elina has outgrown him as an employee of Oko’s place. He’s a great pony for children who are ready to ride something with a bit more pep. He’s also super safe on the trail and the beach, so he will offer his wee riders a fabulous experience when we begin offering rides away from home.
