Meet Nella!
Nella the 4yo Shih Tzu X was referred by her vet for hydrotherapy as she had bilateral luxating patella, (which means both of her knee caps were unstable and popped out of alignment every so often). She often skipped along, lifting her hinds limbs as she walked. She was needing to undergo surgical repair. At this point, it was clear that Nella was quite overweight and so the suggestion was, for Nella to lose some of her much loved insulation and hit the gym! Obviously with dodgy knees, the exercise had to be low impact and supportive thatโs where hydrotherapy came in.
Nellaโs treat allocation got a complete overhaul and her family were well on board with making adjustments to how much Nella consumed and how she moved around in her environment. Pre-surgical, fortnightly hydrotherapy provided a chance to check in with her family, undertake a therapeutic hydro session and hop on the scales and within a few months, Nella had dropped 2kgs and was deemed fit for surgery.

Thanks to hydrotherapy and the changes her family made, Nellaโs surgery was a success. The pre-hab proved valuable for helping to build muscle and improve body condition and the post surgical rehab offered that slow, controlled movement which is so crucial for newly operated limbs. She still has a wee way to go with her recovery but needless to say, Nellaโs family are committed to keeping the weight off and they are hopeful that with the strength she has built and the changes made to her exercise regime, they might be able to avoid a second surgery for Nella.
