Recently we have had a few clients sadly lose their rabbits unexpectedly. While the cause is not always confirmed, one possible cause can be Rabbit Calicivirus (Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease), a virus that can cause sudden illness in rabbits.
This disease can affect both domestic and wild rabbits and can spread very easily through insects, contaminated food, or contact with infected rabbits. Because the virus is also used to help control wild rabbit populations in New Zealand, pet rabbits can still be exposed even if they live indoors.
Signs can include:
• Sudden death
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Rapid breathing
• Bleeding from the nose or mouth
• Collapse or seizures
Vaccination is the best protection, and we recommend keeping your rabbit’s vaccinations up to date with an annual booster.
If you would like to check your rabbit’s vaccination status or book them in for vaccination, please contact the clinic on (06) 757 4838.
