Remember Holly's last video where she was learning to stay on her bed?

Here's what happened next…

Once Holly understood the exercise with pretend visitors, it was time to make it more realistic. In this session, I added actual “visitors" at the front door and practised staying calm while people arrived.

The visitors may have been recruited for the occasion (and there was definitely some laughing involved 😂), but Holly's response was spot on. She stayed relaxed on her bed and didn't budge.
This is one of the biggest differences between teaching a behaviour and training for real life. First we teach the skill. Then we practise it in the situations where it actually matters.

I'm really proud of the progress Holly made in bootcamp. 🐾

For many people, private coaching is the game changer 🐾

Having personalised support means training can be tailored to your dog, your lifestyle, and the specific challenges you’re working through together. That’s often when the real progress starts to happen.

If you’re ready for personalised support with your dog, bookings can be made directly through my website. If weekdays are tricky for you, I'm taking bookings on Saturdays right through winter.

Big shout out to Rachael and Jojo for staring in this video. Sadly, Jojo was knocked down a couple of days later. May she chase rabbit round the clouds for all eternity. She was truly loved 💔🐶

I’ve been doing lots of group dog walking these last few months, and really LOVING it!

I started a dog walking business here in Tasman Bay 15 years ago and it is still going strong. I’ve had the pleasure of getting out with the dogs a lot more than usual these last few months and I’m so grateful.

I learn so much watching dogs in groups. After 15 years I’m still learning!!

I have so much fun with them. They are goofy, loving, sweet, mischievous, loyal and forgiving 🙏💕

Yay dogs 🐶 ✌️😁

Delilah the Cavoodle. She was just over 4 months in this photo. How cute is she!!

I really love the Cavoodle as a solid choice as a family pet. They are super smart and sweet.

I visited Delilah and her owners at home for private coaching. First sessions with a new client are 2 hours and you gain a solid plan for how to achieve your goals with your dog.

Remember little Minnie who was afraid of the car? Well look at her go! 😍

She has made so much progress. I’m so proud of Minnie! AND her fabulous owner for putting in the time to help Minnie overcome her fear of the car.

They are still building up to longer journeys and I can’t wait to see these gals on road trips before long.

Train in repetitions for success.

When you want to teach your dog a new training exercise or trick, your best bet is to
train in repetitions.

This means isolating the training exercise you wanna
work on and repeating it over and over. I like to think
of it like ‘brainwashing’ the dog. But really we are
helping the dog develop neural pathways that will
strengthen their response to the training in the future
🤓🐶

I train in sets of 5 and then stop, assess how the dog
is doing, and decide what to do next. If my dog is
getting 5 out 5 correct, it is probably time to push
forward to the next level of training.

I’m careful to keep the training at a level where my dog
can be successful and I only reward correct responses.

There are HEAPS more training tips like this in my online
course called The Manners Manual for Dogs.

Nail trimming can be stressful for dogs. You can see from the start of the video that Blue started off literally snapping at the trimming tool!

We practiced heaps of toe touches. One touch in exchange for a treat. Then we did nail touches. One touch for one treat. Then we moved on to two handed touches and so on until he learned that me interacting with his nail is actually something to look forward to. It’s great to see him at the end presenting his nails for trimming.

So many people tell me that their dogs' "ears are painted on." It makes me laugh every time, mainly because of the acute and impressive hearing capabilities of the dog. Oh they hear us alright!! It is up to us to make it worth their while to pay attention to us. Just handing out treats is not enough. Be your dogs' friend and advocate so they want to listen to you ✌😎 🐶

Diesel needs a house sitter in Motueka.

This is Diesel, he is about 8 or 9 years old. His owner has suddenly fallen very unwell and he needs someone to look after him (in his own home) for the foreseeable. His owner is likely to be in hospital for 3 months.

Diesel would be much more comfortable with a female housesitter, so ladies only please. It’s a small house with an enclosed garden not far from the Caltex/clock tower. It’s not very fancy, but it’s clean, cosy and private. One bedroom only available so no children please. Ideally you would have no other pets.

Diesel is good with people and good with other dogs. He is a big boy and he is a bit of puller but he has a good harness. He is good off lead. He loves to play fetch.

You would live in the house rent free in exchange for looking after him and the house until his owner can return from hospital. References will be required, dog experience a bonus. Start ASAP from Saturday 31 Jan.

As I write this post I’m preparing to go on holidays and I won’t have access to internet again until 2 Feb. Please email Shaloe on [email protected] if you are keen.

I’ve been walking Diesel for 8 years, he is a big goof ball full of love.
