Happy world parrot day!!! ❤️🦜

30/05/2026

Today is globally recognized as World Parrot Day—a time to celebrate these incredibly intelligent, charismatic birds, but also a crucial reminder of the challenges they face. Parrots are among the most endangered bird groups on the planet, and here at Natureland, we are dedicated to protecting their future.

🌿 Why your support matters:
Running vital conservation work takes a village. Natureland is proudly part of two Breed-for-Release programmes for the spectacular South Island Kākā and the Yellow-Crowned Kākāriki. These programmes are vital for restoring wild populations, but they are incredibly expensive to run.

Whether you are supporting us today by dropping off garden donations (fresh browse!), purchasing a zoo membership, or donating directly, you are helping us look after our birds and protect their future in the wild.

💚 Every dollar counts! If you'd like to celebrate World Parrot Day by making a direct impact, please consider donating to help us build our new Kākā aviary:

Kia ora everyone! Due to the persistent rain forecasted for tomorrow we have decided to postpone the event and activities until next Saturday, 6 June.

We wanted to give everyone the best opportunity to take advantage of our free workshops, pop up parrot talks, and scavenger hunt. We're really looking forward to chatting with you about parrot conservation next week.

Please share this with any of your community pages that might be interested in attending.

With Kaka being released in Nelson it's more important than ever to swing by for a chat so you can learn to care for them in your own backyard.

The workshops will teach you a bit about how we care for them in our breed for release programme, the pop up talks with allow you to get to know them a bit better, and the scavenger hunt will introduce you to some legendary extinct parrots and the rarest of them all.

Can't wait to see you all next Saturday!

Meet the South Island Kākā!

With World Parrot Day just around the corner, we wanted to re-introduce some of our most loved parrots!

Often heard before they are seen, the Kākā is a large, charismatic forest parrot known for its harsh, musical calls and incredible acrobatics in the treetops.

Fun Fact: Kākā have a brush-tipped tongue, perfectly adapted for lapping up sweet honeydew and tree sap!

We’ve got a really great mini educational series coming up next week about this species and their breed for release programme. Stay tuned to get the inside scoop!

🎉 It’s World Parrot Day this Sunday, and we are celebrating at Natureland! 🎉

World Parrot Day is all about raising awareness for these intelligent birds and highlighting the vital conservation work needed to protect them. To celebrate, we've got an amazing lineup for you:

🕵️‍♂️ Sunday Scavenger Hunt: Track down extinct and rare parrots! Those who complete and are successful in their scavenger hunt will be entered to win an unforgettable encounter with our new Kea, Tiki! 🦜

📅 Sunday Timetable:

11:15AM: Kea Enrichment Workshop (30mins) ➔ 11:45 AM: Kea Talk

2:00 PM: Kākā Enrichment Workshop (30mins) ➔ 2:30PM: Kākā Talk

Why your support matters: From daily care to our high-stakes conservation efforts, we couldn't do this without you. Natureland is actively involved in two expensive breed-for-release programmes for the Yellow-Crowned Kākāriki and South Island Kākā.

Every membership bought, garden donation dropped off, or dollar gifted goes directly toward protecting their future in the wild.

👇 Help us build their future: Show our Kākā some love this World Parrot Day by donating to our new aviary project. Every dollar counts! 🔗 https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/building-the-bridge-to-the-brook-a-new-kaka-aviary

⭐️Volunteer of the Month ⭐️

This month we are celebrating Jesse as our volunteer of the month.

Jesse has been an absolute legend over the past few months, showing up four days a week and giving it his all every single time. An incredible human, hard working, and always bringing a good laugh along with him.

From tackling all sorts of tasks across the park, Jesse has made a huge impact and helped transform the place along the way.

We love having you here, Jesse - this is so well deserved!

Meet the Yellow-Crowned Kākāriki! 💛 With World Parrot Day coming up, we wanted to re-introduce some of our favourite parrots!
If you hear a rapid, cheerful chatter high up in the canopy, you’re likely listening to this bright, energetic parakeet. They are fast, vibrant, and always on the move!

Fun Fact: "Kākāriki" means "small green parrot" in te reo Māori, and it’s also the word for the color green! They are true masters of camouflage among the leaves. 🍃
