I've been selling dog treats made from Koi Carp for a few years now, and the first reaction is almost always the same. You make what?

Then I explain, and people get it in about ten seconds.

These fish are wrecking our waterways. Some of the ones that get pulled out end up as compost or fertiliser. That's not nothing, but it's about the lowest value you can get out of a perfectly good animal protein, and the cost of removal is still a barrier.

It seemed like a waste, so we started freeze-drying them instead. 🐟

I'm not going to pretend a bag of dog treats can fix this entire problem. It can't. But the more value we can get out of each fish, the more reason there is to keep taking them out.

Our dogs worked out the value proposition immediately. 🐶

Is your dog scratching and you can't work out why? You're not alone.
It's one of the most common reasons dogs see their vet, and the reasons can be complicated. An itch from a food intolerance can look identical to one from the environment.

That's why we built our Ocean Fish dog food to do two things:

🐶 HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DOG DAY! 🐶

Today is International Dog Day, so I thought I'd introduce you to my very first dog - Kim.

That's little me with her in this photo. ❤️

I grew up on a dairy farm in Canterbury and, like so many farm dogs, Kim wasn't just a working dog. She was very much our pet too, and she was often at my side.

One of my favourite memories of her was when we'd had a new concrete path laid into the cowshed. Before it had properly dried, Kim somehow got onto it and left her paw prints all the way through the new concrete.

Us kids thought it was hilarious. My parents possibly less so. 😂🐾

Kim lived to a grand old age and eventually went completely grey.

Then came Bruno, a noisy Huntaway, Spud and Tip, two Collies, then Khumbu, a chocolate Labrador and the first dog who was truly mine - and now there's Tyson, my tricolour Border Collie.

Dogs have been part of my life for almost as long as I can remember. They became part of my working life when I became a vet, and eventually they were the reason I started Genius.

So today, here's to all the dogs who leave their paw prints on our lives - sometimes quite literally. ❤️🐾

In the past 3 weeks, I’ve had two people close to me message about the same thing…

👉 Their dog had eaten cocoa

One was a large golden retriever cross who snaffled a piece of chocolate cake.
She was completely fine.

The other was a small fox terrier who ate almost an entire tray of brownies topped with dark chocolate.
He ended up at the vet for the standard treatment - vomiting, activated charcoal, fluids… but thankfully recovered.

The difference?
👉 Dose + dog size.

🍫 Most dog owners know chocolate is dangerous to dogs.
What’s often overlooked is that cocoa is even more dangerous.

Cocoa contains much higher levels of theobromine - the compound that is toxic to dogs - so smaller amounts can cause bigger problems.

With Easter here, it’s a timely reminder that it's not just chocolate eggs to be mindful of…
it’s the cocoa hiding in everyday treats like cakes, brownies, and baking ingredients.

If your dog eats cocoa or chocolate, don’t wait - call your vet 🩺
They’ll be able to assess the risk based on your dog’s size and what was eaten.

This photo popped up on my Facebook memories last week. It was taken 15 years ago on a volunteer trip to Niue to provide veterinary care, including neutering many of the island's dogs and cats to help reduce overpopulation. ✂ 🐶🐱

I often get asked if I miss being a clinical practice vet. While I honestly love my business and helping improve pets lives through better nutrition (something I have always been super passionate about), if I was to go back into practice it would be so I could do more of this sort of volunteer work. 👩‍⚕️
