I struggled to find anything NZ made. So much of our pet food comes from overseas, which for an agricultural nation like NZ makes no sense to me! In the past 3 weeks, I’ve had two people close to me message about the same thing…

👉 Their dog had eaten cocoa

One was a large golden retriever cross who snaffled a piece of chocolate cake.
She was completely fine.

The other was a small fox terrier who ate almost an entire tray of brownies topped with dark chocolate.
He ended up at the vet for the standard treatment - vomiting, activated charcoal, fluids… but thankfully recovered.

The difference?
👉 Dose + dog size.

🍫 Most dog owners know chocolate is dangerous to dogs.
What’s often overlooked is that cocoa is even more dangerous.

Cocoa contains much higher levels of theobromine - the compound that is toxic to dogs - so smaller amounts can cause bigger problems.

With Easter here, it’s a timely reminder that it's not just chocolate eggs to be mindful of…
it’s the cocoa hiding in everyday treats like cakes, brownies, and baking ingredients.

If your dog eats cocoa or chocolate, don’t wait - call your vet 🩺
They’ll be able to assess the risk based on your dog’s size and what was eaten.

This photo popped up on my Facebook memories last week. It was taken 15 years ago on a volunteer trip to Niue to provide veterinary care, including neutering many of the island's dogs and cats to help reduce overpopulation. ✂ 🐶🐱

I often get asked if I miss being a clinical practice vet. While I honestly love my business and helping improve pets lives through better nutrition (something I have always been super passionate about), if I was to go back into practice it would be so I could do more of this sort of volunteer work. 👩‍⚕️

Today is World Environment Day 🌎

This year's theme is 'beating plastic pollution'. Unfortunately, the pet food industry creates an enormous amount of plastic waste.

Our packaging still needs to be made of plastic to ensure our food remains safe and nutritious. But we are currently moving all of our packaging into soft plastic recyclable material 🥰

✅ Our 2.5kg bags are already in soft plastic recyclable packaging
✅ We'll soon be releasing our trial bags and our Koi Carp treats in soft plastic recyclable bags as well
✅ When we've used up all our existing 9kg packaging (we do have a lot!) we'll be changing these to soft plastic recyclable material as well

We'd like to see the government do more to help small NZ businesses like ours make the transition into packaging that is recyclable AND make it easy for consumers to recycle soft plastics in their normal kerbside recycling.

🤞 Our home base of Nelson has recently been involved in some kerbside trials and we'd love to see this rolled out nationwide.

We often get asked about the fish oil in our Ocean Fish recipe 🐟

Here at Genius we believe that joint support is important at all life stages and so our Ocean Fish diet is packed with Salmon and enriched with fish oil to help maintain healthy joints at all ages.

👉 But unfortunately there’s no requirement for Adult or Senior dog foods to include DHA or EPA — only puppy food is required to have a minimal level of them.

💧 Omega 3 Fatty acids are natural anti-inflammatories that can help reduce joint pain. The types of Omega 3 that are most beneficial for joints are DHA and EPA. These are found in high levels in fatty fish, like Salmon, and can be concentrated into fish and other marine oils.

Due to the higher cost of including these ingredients many Adult and Senior dog foods do not contain any DHA and EPA.

To be clear - this is not at the level of a therapeutic diet such as Hills J/D, but at a good, everyday level to support growing pups, active adults and senior dogs without current signs of osteoarthritis.
