🐾 David Lowe and Izzie enjoyed spending some time at the Dog Trial Championships in Te Aute this week, catching up with the working dog community and watching the Vet Services-sponsored Bench Class.

It was great to celebrate the hard work, care, and dedication that goes into keeping working dogs healthy, sound, and performing at their best.

Meet Sausage — and her very memorable cartoon eye 👁️🐱💛

Sausage was born with a congenital defect affecting her eye, giving it its unusual appearance. Unfortunately, the condition was painful and meant she had very limited vision from that eye.

After careful discussion with her family, the best option for Sausage’s comfort and quality of life was an enucleation (surgical eye removal). To save her another anaesthetic later on, she also got desexed on the same day — no unwanted kittens for this girl! ✨

Despite the big day, Sausage was an absolute trooper from start to finish. She kept her sweet, smoochy personality the whole way through and has recovered incredibly well.

We think she’s looking pretty amazing already 🥰

Proud to support our iconic kiwi 🥝

Vet Services are proud to work with Save the Kiwi and the Napier Kiwi Crèche — an incredible programme helping protect and grow our local kiwi population.

Each season, over 50 kiwi chicks arrive at the crèche at just ~2 weeks old, before being cared for and released around 3 months later once they reach a safe weight of 1kg.

With kiwi numbers growing across the Eastern Region, knowing how to handle them safely is more important than ever. Over April, our Napier nurses had the privilege of training alongside the Save the Kiwi team (Bev, Miriam & Amy), learning the correct techniques for extracting kiwi from boxes and handling them for examination and veterinary care. 💚

We’ve had a female Birman cat handed in after being found in Meeanee.

She is quite matted around her back end and underweight, suggesting she may have been missing for some time.

Unfortunately, she is not microchipped.

Check out these incredible before & after X-rays! 🦴✨

This young patient received urgent care for a radius fracture at HBAH last year before being referred through to Sharne for orthopaedic surgery.

Radius fractures can be tricky in young puppies. Their bones are still growing, with soft growth plates that can be easily affected. The radius also has a limited blood supply, and it needs to heal in perfect alignment with the ulna — so precision is key.

This brave little pup handled it all like a champ and with such a dedicated family supporting her recovery, she has the very best chance at a great outcome ✨
