“OMG, you have the best job in the world……all you do is play with dogs all day”

We hear this all the time and we would have to agree, it is, but it’s also incredibly demanding. We start before the sun rises and we finish long after the sun goes down. It’s 24/7 and includes weekends and holidays.

It’s cleaning up messes, managing medications, hauling food, endless laundry, moving beds, washing floors and walls, mowing lawns, zig zagging across five acres picking up p**p, breaking up disputes and being covered in mud, slobber, hair and every other imaginable thing we’d rather not identify. That’s the physical.

The emotional is harder. It’s what makes it exhausting. We worry about them, we notice when they’re sad, when they’re not quite acting like themselves. We learn their unique personalities, their quirks, their likes and dislikes and what makes each of them tick. We know their bark. We watch body language, predict next moves, we watch them watching us. We celebrate their little victories and when they come out of their shell, when they make new friends. We become attached, fall in love and eventually we will grieve them.

They don’t know that caring for them is what we do, the best job in the world….. all they know is that while they’re with us, we’re their people, their pack.

That love is what makes the work so special, it’s why we get up in the morning and put on five layers of clothing and Red Band gumboots.

This is a little glimpse behind the scenes, to share with you a little about our day. We may look tired and covered in dog hair but we will continue to show up. Every.Single.Day.

We do it because every single doggo is worth it.
