🎀 Meet Barbie 🎀
Professional Observer. Part-Time Hide-and-Seek Champion. Full-Time Sweetheart.

Hi, I’m Barbie!

Unlike my namesake, I’m not interested in dream houses, convertibles, or being the centre of attention. In fact, if there’s a cosy hiding spot nearby, you’ll probably find me there first.

I’m what the humans call “shy.” I prefer to think of myself as carefully selective about who joins my inner circle.

Here’s how it works:

💕 Stage 1: I watch you from a safe distance.
💕 Stage 2: I decide you’re probably okay.
💕 Stage 3: You earn a slow blink. Congratulations!
💕 Stage 4: Cuddles, affection, and all the love I’ve been keeping hidden.

The thing about cats like me is that we don’t fall in love with everyone straight away. But when we do? It’s something really special.

I dream of a calm home with patient humans who understand that friendship isn’t rushed. Give me a little time, and I’ll show you the sweet, loving girl that’s been waiting for someone to believe in her.

So if you’re looking for a cat who will instantly greet every visitor at the door, that might not be me.

But if you’re looking for a best friend whose trust is earned and whose love is genuine, I might just be your perfect match.

Love,
Barbie 🎀

💔 Bryns time is now at 60 days... and she is still waiting. 💔

If you saw our recent post about Buford, this is his sister, Bryn.

The pair were found tied to a fence together with a shoelace.

Bryn came into our care at just 9 weeks old. Today, she is 4½ months old and has spent over 60 days available for adoption and waiting for a family of her own.

She is a beautiful puppy with the sweetest nature. Kind, gentle, affectionate, and always ready for a cuddle, Bryn simply wants to love and be loved. She tries so hard to please and would make a wonderful companion.

Sadly, she has outgrown centre life and is desperately ready for a place to call home.

If you can't adopt, please help Bryn by sharing this post. The more people who see her, the better her chance of finally finding the loving family she deserves. ❤️

Tied to a fence by a shoelace with his sister Bryn… in the cold… left behind by the people he trusted most 💔

That’s how Buford’s story began.

He was just a baby, scared, confused, and waiting for someone who was never coming back. We don’t know how long he was there, but we do know he deserved so much better.

Thankfully, a kind member of the public saw them, reached out, and Buford and his sister were saved. 💛

Now fast forward to today… and you’d never guess the heartbreak he’s been through. Buford is full of life, amazing with kids, and has the kind of energy that brings joy into every room he enters. He loves hard, trusts deeply, and just wants someone to choose him.

But he’s still waiting for his forever family.

If you’ve met Buford, tell us your favourite thing about him in the comments 🥹

Please share his story, let’s find this sweet boy the loving home he’s always deserved. Because this time… it needs to be forever. 🏡🐾

Thank you for filling our community pantry! 🤍

We are honestly blown away. Thank you so much to every single person who has donated to our community pantry, every contribution, big or small, is helping animals in our community stay fed and cared for.

A very special shoutout to the amazing family who are all the way over in Canada, who sent food through our local Woolworths delivery, we are beyond grateful by your kindness and support.

While the pantry is currently full (which is amazing!), we receive requests almost daily from community members needing help feeding their animals. So please keep the donations coming, they truly make a difference 🐾

We are so grateful for your ongoing support! ❤️

She’s Changed So Much in 3 Months… But She’s Still Waiting 💔

In the 3 months Livvy has been with us, she’s come such a long way. She’s grown in confidence, shown us her beautiful personality, and learned to trust again.

But one thing hasn’t changed… she’s still waiting.

What Livvy needs most is something we simply can’t give her in a shelter.

She’s searching for a connection. She craves companionship, affection, and someone to call her own. Every day, she gives her whole heart to the people around her, quietly hoping that one of them will be hers forever.

Livvy is a happy, loving girl who deserves more than kennel life. She deserves a couch to curl up on, a family to come home to, and a person who chooses her, every single day.

We can care for Livvy… but we can’t be her person.

If you’ve been looking for a loyal companion and a best friend for life’s adventures, Livvy is waiting for you ❤️🐾

📣 Puppies Before Profit – Bring in Breeder Laws! 📣

Today, we’re launching our Puppies Before Profit campaign, to raise awareness around New Zealand’s lack of dog breeding legislation and to build support for law reforms.

Currently, we’re FAR behind other countries when it comes to dog breeding laws. In New Zealand:

🐾 Anyone can breed and sell puppies
🐾 There are no restrictions on the number of breeding dogs a person can keep
🐾 There are no minimum supervision levels
🐾 There are no minimum or maximum ages for breeding
🐾 There are no maximum number of litters across a dog’s lifetime
🐾 There are no restrictions on close inbreeding.

Despite the current lack of specific rules, our recently commissioned survey found that 96% of New Zealanders think dog breeding should be regulated.

This isn’t a niche animal welfare issue. It’s something that New Zealanders deeply care about. We need clear, enforceable standards that apply to all breeders, and ensure every breeding dog receives appropriate care ❤️

Our team arrived at the SPCA Gisborne centre this morning to a heartbreaking discovery. 🐾💔

A young puppy, now named Cari, had been left outside our premises overnight in a taped-up cardboard box.

After reviewing our security footage, we found that Cari had been left on our deck at approximately 6:38pm the previous evening. Temperatures dropped to just 3°C overnight, and footage showed the frightened puppy spending hours trying to escape the box. When our staff arrived the next morning, she was cold, distressed, and alone.
A note left with the puppy stated that she had been found on the side of the road and that the finder hoped we could find her a good home. While we are grateful that Cari was eventually brought somewhere she could receive care, leaving an animal unattended, particularly overnight and in freezing temperatures could easily have ended in tragedy.

Cari is estimated to be around nine weeks old and is now safe, warm, and receiving lots of love from centre staff.

We would like to use this opportunity to remind the public that if you find a stray or abandoned animal, rather than leaving them outside and alone overnight, there are safer options available. You could reach out to an after-hours veterinary clinic, contact the local Gisborne Council Animal Control, or if possible, provide temporary care until help is available. We also recommend posting on local lost-and-found pet pages on Facebook, or make arrangements to bring the animal to us during opening hours.

We understand that people often have good intentions, but animals can suffer from exposure, stress, dehydration, injury, or worse when left alone without anyone knowing they are there.

Cari was one of the lucky ones. We hope sharing her story will help prevent this from happening time and time again and encourage people to reach out for help rather than leaving an animal to fend for itself. 🩷

💛 Thank you everyone for your support and concern for Cari.

Due to the overwhelming response and volume of comments, we have turned comments off on this post. Please know that Cari is safe, warm, and being well cared for. 🐾

‼️🐾 Community Help Needed 🐾‼️

Our pantry stocks are running extremely low and we need your help to keep it going.

If you’re able to donate unopened pet food, treats, or other pet essentials, every donation makes a difference and helps support local pets and the people who love them.

Did you know we offer an emergency pet food pantry to help families in our community who are experiencing temporary hardship?

This service helps keep beloved pets in their homes during difficult times.

Together, we can make sure no family has to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their furry family members.

Donations can be dropped off at SPCA centre or the SPCA op shop in town.

Thank you for helping us support our community, one paw at a time. ❤️🐾
