Our aim is to create a home away from home, where your pet can enjoy the familiarities and routines they are used to and you can rest assured knowing they are safe and happy! Through their stay with us, you can expect your pet would be welcomed inside our home, where they will have plenty of human company, love, and care.

While this is not something we have found ourselves having to address previously, we continue to receive messages about this so wanted to take a moment to address this.

A sincere thank you to those who recently brought to our attention that content created by McKenzie Manor had been copied and shared elsewhere by a new facility as original work.

After being contacted, the other party acknowledged the direct copy and initially removed the content. Unfortunately, we have since become aware that a slightly modified version, still very much built from our content, has been reshared.

While we are genuinely flattered that our business, values and content may inspire others, direct plagiarism is always disappointing 😌

Building a business takes countless hours behind the scenes. The care we provide our guests is only one part of what we do. There are also the late nights, early mornings, planning, learning, writing, creating and continual investment required to build something unique and authentic.

We share this simply to thank those who recognised our work and took the time to let us know. It is also a reminder that while starting and growing a business is never easy, how we choose to conduct ourselves is always a reflection of who we are.

As for us, we’ll continue doing what we’ve always done: creating original content, sharing our journey, and giving you an authentic look at what makes McKenzie Manor so special 🥰

🚨 DRAMA ALERT 🚨

On Wednesday morning, Puku woke up and convinced us he needed urgent medical attention.

A limp.
A concerned mum.
A full assessment.
A trip to the vet.

The diagnosis?

✨ World’s Biggest Drama King ✨

When Puku first showed signs of discomfort, we immediately contacted his mum and carried out a thorough check. There was no swelling, no heat, no obvious injury, no restriction to movement, and only a tiny healed scab that may have been from an old adventure elsewhere.

Wanting to be safe rather than sorry, off to the vet we went.

After a full examination, the professional verdict was exactly what Puku’s mum suspected all along…

He was absolutely fine. 😂

In fact, it seems Puku performed his role as “Poor Injured Dog” so convincingly that he earned himself a VIP chauffeured trip to the vet and a whole lot of extra attention.

And honestly? We’d rather investigate 100 drama queens than miss the one dog who genuinely needs help.

Because that’s what personalised care looks like.

Every change in behaviour, every limp, every skipped meal, every little thing gets noticed when your dog isn’t just another number.

PUKU’S VERY EXPENSIVE ACT OF DRAMA 🎭🐾

Puku has settled beautifully back into his second long holiday with us. Confident, comfortable, and right at home, he quickly slipped back into the routines he knows so well.

Then Wednesday morning arrived.

And so did… the limp.

As always, the moment we noticed something wasn’t quite right, we contacted Puku’s mum and began assessing him. We carefully checked him over from nose to tail, looking for any clues as to what had happened.

There was no moisture, no swelling, no heat, and no obvious signs of inflammation. He wasn’t showing any other signs of pain or restriction and remained happy in himself. The only thing we could find was a tiny scab that appeared dry and well-healed, perhaps from a previous encounter with a stick or a minor scrape before his stay.

Still, when it comes to our guests, we don’t guess.

We monitor.
We communicate.
And when needed, we seek veterinary advice.

So off Puku went for a veterinary check-up.

After a thorough examination, the official diagnosis was reached:

As his mum lovingly predicted, it seems our dear Puku may have discovered that a slight limp attracts an impressive amount of attention.

In fact, he sold the performance so convincingly that he earned himself an all-expenses-paid trip to the vet.

Honestly, we’re impressed.

Most dogs settle in and enjoy the countryside.

Puku settled in and secured a medical consultation.

That’s commitment to the role.

While the outcome gave us all a laugh, we wanted to share Puku’s story because it demonstrates exactly what you can expect when your dog stays with us.

When something seems out of character, no matter how small, we notice. We investigate. We communicate with you. And if there is any doubt, we seek professional veterinary advice.

Because whether your dog is genuinely unwell or simply an Oscar-worthy actor like Puku, their wellbeing always comes first.

This week we welcomed Cooper — a 10 month old Vizsla pup — for his trial stay ahead of a longer holiday still to come ❤️

For many dogs, trial stays are such an important part of setting them up for success. They give dogs the opportunity to build familiarity, confidence, and trust in both a new environment and the people caring for them long before an extended stay.

And Cooper? He’s already proving just how loved he is by his family — making the journey all the way from Waiheke Island to spend time with us here at McKenzie Manor 🚢🐾

Because when it comes to finding the right care for your dog, distance quickly becomes secondary to knowing they’ll feel safe, understood, and genuinely cared for while you’re away 🤍

We can’t wait to watch Cooper continue to grow in confidence during his future holidays with us.

Let’s talk about a common misconception: Hackles Up Doesn’t Always Mean “Aggressive”

One of the most misunderstood parts of dog body language is seeing a dog’s hackles rise and immediately assuming a fight is about to happen. While raised hackles can be associated with tension or discomfort, they’re actually just a physical response to arousal — and arousal can come from many different emotions, not just aggression.

Think of it like goosebumps in humans. Excitement, uncertainty, adrenaline, curiosity, overstimulation, or nervousness can all create the same physical reaction.

Mishie and Bo were the perfect reminder of this 🥰

When they first met, both pups were a little stiff in their body language and slightly hackly. That initial “sizing each other up” moment is incredibly normal, especially for dogs navigating a brand new social interaction. Rather than forcing instant interaction or assuming the worst, we gave them the opportunity to communicate naturally and settle at their own pace.

Before long, their body language began to soften.

Play bows started appearing.
Then came the zoomies.
Then the mutual chasing games.
And just as importantly — they coexisted beautifully in the quiet moments too.

That’s something we pay close attention to. True compatibility isn’t always about nonstop play. Sometimes it’s simply two dogs being able to comfortably exist alongside each other, sharing space calmly and naturally.

Hackles are just one piece of the puzzle. Reading dogs properly means looking at the whole picture:

* overall body posture
* movement and softness
* facial expression
* ability to disengage
* play invitations
* recovery after excitement
* respect of boundaries

Dogs communicate in incredibly nuanced ways, and moments like this are a lovely reminder that first impressions don’t always tell the full story.

It’s been so special watching Mishie and Bo become completely content in their friendship 💛
