8 DAYS TO GO!

The whelping area is all ready in the living room and our beautiful Holly is getting very comfortable as we count down to meeting her little ones.

Her belly is shaved, the puppies are very active, and we can already see and feel plenty of movement — with lovely strong heartbeats too. 🥰

Holly is feeling happy and comfortable, still enjoying her gentle walks and generally taking pregnancy in true Border Collie style — as though nothing much has changed! 😂

Now we are just waiting for the exciting part...

🐾 DOG GROOMING & COAT CARE 🐾

I’m opening up a few grooming appointments and offering groom, bath, blow dry, brushing, deshedding and grooming/tidying services for dogs.

I have extensive experience with Border Collies and double-coated breeds, and as a Border Collie breeder and exhibitor, I do all of my own show grooming and coat preparation.

Every dog is different, so I don't believe in a one-price-fits-all approach. Prices depend on the size of the dog, coat type, condition, amount of shedding and time required, and also behavior of the dog.

Services can include:

- Bath & blow dry
- Thorough brush & deshed
- Coat maintenance
- Feet and sanitary tidy
- Nails
- Basic grooming/scissoring
-Full groom where appropriate
- Puppy introduction to grooming

Prices from $50, with an individual quote based on your dog's coat and condition.

Pick-up and drop-off available locally in Ōtaki, Levin and Foxton, for a small surcharge.

If you'd like a quote, send me a few photos of your dog, their breed and approximate size, and I can give you an estimate.

Very heavily matted, neglected or particularly time-consuming coats will be quoted individually.

Do I stud out my dogs? Yes.
Do I have conditions? Absolutely.

I've spent many years building Stonehaven into the breeding program it is today. That has meant a considerable investment in health testing, pedigree research, evaluation, showing, training, raising puppies and, most importantly, continually working to improve the lines.

So yes, I do have expectations when someone wants to use one of my stud dogs or have a Stonehaven puppy on the main register.

When I agree to a stud, I'm putting a considerable amount of trust in the person using my dog and in what happens with the resulting puppies.

One of my conditions is that puppies from my lines are not placed on the main register unless the breeder is retaining that puppy themselves, in their own name and at their own property.

Anyone wanting to breed from my lines needs to talk to me first. That's not about controlling someone else's breeding program — it's about protecting the work that has gone into mine and making sure the next generation is bred with the same level of care and consideration.

If that sounds arrogant to some, I'm sorry you see it that way. But unless you've put in the years, the research, the financial investment, the countless hours and the emotional commitment involved in building a breeding program, you probably won't fully understand why I take it seriously.

I don't just own these dogs. I've invested years into the lines behind them, and I take responsibility for where those lines go next.

What do we look for when assessing our puppies?

When we assess a litter, we look at much more than colour or a pretty face.

We look at structure, proportions, bone, shoulder placement, angulation, topline, feet and movement, as well as temperament and confidence.

Correct structure isn't just important for the show ring — it also plays an important part in producing dogs that can move well and stay sound throughout their lives.

We also bring in experienced Border Collie breed specialists to help assess our litters. Having other knowledgeable eyes helps us make a more objective assessment of each puppy.

Our goal when planning a litter is to produce as many genuine show prospects as possible — ideally the whole litter.

We were especially pleased with our recent Indie × Whip ( NZ CH STONEHAVEN HEART ON FIRE & AUS&NZCH WYNNLAKE WHIP IT GOOD) litter, where the puppies were assessed as show prospects. Several are already making their mark in the show ring, with more starting their show careers soon. ❤️

Not every puppy will be shown, and that's perfectly okay. What matters to us is that we produce a litter of well-constructed, healthy, sound and lovely-tempered Border Collies that can thrive in whatever life their new family chooses for them.

Quality across the whole litter is always the goal at Stonehaven.
