Hard to fault darling Penny today stepping back up to 95 - she felt fantastic and was beautifully behaved 🩷

Unfortunately our day came to a premature end as Penny made a wee mistake at a table that would have normally been forgiven and allow us to scramble over, however this fence was aligned with a wire fence so that we could jump through a paddock and the wires pinned behind the jump under a nail.
The wires pinged off and Penny was stuck on top of the table tangled up and then pulled them off and I was thrown out the way.

Very lucky to just be bruised and Penny just having some minor slices and skin off, she was a very clever girl trying not to land on top of me 🥰

Gutting as she felt incredible until then and I think it was preventable if the wires had been stapled to the jump instead of being wedged under a nail 🙃

Onwards and upwards! Thanks Lynne McKenzie for all your help and sorry for the heart attack when you realised what had happened 😆

🌟Eventing Southland🌟

What a weekend! 18 hour round trip and some pretty awful weather but I couldn’t fault Penny’s behaviour or performance 🥹

On Saturday we competed in the Thoroughbred Challenge Stakes! Penny took out the .nz Rising Star Thoroughbred Stakes class for horses off the track less than two years, as well as third overall in the TB challenge 🥇🏆😍
HUGE thank you to .nz Oamaru Jockey Club, Otago Racing Club, Southland Racing Club and Gallop South for the incredibly generous sponsorship. And a huge thank you to Eventing Southland for running these exciting classes, such a great initiative! 🤩⭐️ we will definitely be back…

Sunday was so close to another perfect day with a PB dressage and clear SJ in the Equine Sports Gail Richardson CCN80, however we lost a shoe early on XC and went completely sliiiiding into an early fence and had to represent. Gutting as she totally deserved a DC, but that’s eventing and I have now learnt that only hind studs don’t quite cut it in Southland 🌧️😅🫠

So grateful to Milly Rowley and Sara Rowley for the ride down and all their help! ♥️

In an effort to be a little (a lot!!) more active on this page this year, here is a little insight into a session this morning with a breaker I am working with at the moment 💭

I am really lucky to have had great support from clients since I returned to Canterbury and have some really lovely horses to work with - this guy is no exception.

Today was Harry’s second time long reining.
I started the session flexing him and doing ‘rope yields’ before I bridled him. The rope yields help to teach him to stand on his own, flex to pressure and disengage the hindquarters to face me. He doesn’t move while I walk around him with the rope, then flexes when I apply pressure but only moves when I ask with a ‘click’.

The long reining was much improved from yesterday and he is starting to accept the contact and lift his nose out rather than curl behind the vertical, although this is a work in progress.
The same thing occurs with the double lunging - which was his first time doing so today - and I was very impressed with how little he cared about the ropes. You can see in the video at the trot him chomping a lot and sucking his neck in as he isn’t sure about holding the bit properly yet. I kept the reins engaged but soft to encourage him to take a contact and take his head forward, this will only improve with time 😇

By now a lot of you will have heard that unfortunately my time in the Manawatu under Muzi James' wing is coming to an end earlier than I envisioned..although I completed last semester of my degree online, I've been informed I can't continue extramurally for my final year 🥺📚

What a time up here I have had, though! 9 months has gone incredibly fast and has led me to some amazing opportunities; grooming at my first International Events (and taking home 2x grooms awards!), meeting and modelling for the wonderful Brave Pants Company and getting a taster for NI events with my own horses. I cannot thank Muzi - as well as her whole family - for all of the guidance, kindness and opportunities. I'll never forget it and I hope this isn't the last time I'm in 'The Ding!'🛎️❤️

Although gutted to be leaving, I am determined to make the best of the situation and grab 2026 by the horns! I have learnt and grown so much in the nearly 9 months up here and I can't wait to put it all into practice. Who knows, I might be back up here at some point!!🤞🏼

2026 is the Year of the Horse - symbolising Energy and Ambition! These are the things I am focusing on for this next chapter, continuing to build on what I have learnt from my time with Muzi and really focus my time and energy on the things I want to achieve in life.

With that being said, I will be moving back to Canterbury in a weeks time and so will be available for some *limited* services alongside my studies:
🌟 - Freelance Grooming [up to and including FEI]
🌟 - Catch Rides [Competition & Home]
🌟 - Schooling and Starting [Limited spaces available]

If you are interested in any of the above, don't hesitate to message me. Otherwise thanks for your support on my journey and heres to a spectacular 2026!

That’s a wrap on 2025 - another huge year of opportunities and learning! 🌈

Been rather slack on updates on here (something I resolve to improve on in 2026!) but the girls and I have been thoroughly enjoying our time in Feilding working and learning from .james 🙌🏼
Some highlights of the last 7 months include:
🌟 Quietly producing my two horses - Penny getting out eventing and LOVING it - placing in 3/4 starts
🌟Grooming at some iconic North Island events
🌟 Puhinui @ Taupo where the kids did the trifecta 🥇🥇🥈 and I came away with 2 x grooms prizes ☺️
I can’t thank .james enough for her mentorship 🥰

Alongside the horses the university grind has continued! I can’t lie, it definitely has not been easy balancing full time work and full time studying but I was super stoked with my grades (straight A’s!) so however I’m managing it must be working!

I feel exceptionally lucky to have the opportunity to pursue two directions that I am so passionate about 🐴🧪🌿 📚

2026 is already shaping up to be an exciting year and I am hungry to get cracking! There’s no telling exactly what is in store but I have no doubt it will be full of learning and adventure 🤩

I realised I’ve been rather slack on the update front, especially as I promised myself 2025 would be the year I was active on my equestrian page!🙈
So here’s a little update!

Coming up 4 months ago I packed up my things and two horses and moved up north to the mighty Manawatu to work for Muzi James (née Pottinger) as a working pupil 👩‍🎓 🦄📝
It has been a full on few months and no day has been the same!
From big shifts working on the arena (which is now finished and a DREAM to ride on!) to long reining and hacking horses around our farm and neighbouring farmland, playing ‘auntie’ to baby Hadley, sheep wrangling, digger driving, tractor driving, even got roped into running a 5k relay 🤣

Now with the arena finished and the season approaching systems are all go in the horse side of things and I am loving being back amongst a professional yard and top class horses 💯🌟

It’s the perfect opportunity to build on what I learnt in my time in the UK with Ginny Thomasen and continue to develop my riding with two of my young horses up here with me - all in a beautiful part of the country!

As if working full time wasn’t enough 😅🤭 yes I am still studying! Thankfully Lincoln Uni have been very supportive of my move and are allowing me to finish my degree online 🧪🧬📚 (no mean feat given it’s a practical science degree😅)

All in all, loving the chaos at the moment and looking forward to the season ahead! Who knows what the future holds but I feel very fortunate and grateful to be so busy with two aspects of my life that I am totally passionate about ❤️📚🦄

JJS & Hinterland NZ Three Day Event Championships 2025 🏆

Wow what an absolutely fantastic easter weekend eventing with my two 6 year old mares. Firstly, a huge thank you and congrats to Eventing Canterbury for all of their hard work and running such a brilliant event. So much work was put in and there were so many intiatives and learning opportunities that eventing ‘newbies’ like me could make full use of!

We ticked off lots of firsts this weekend:
⭐️ first three day for both horses and myself
⭐️ first stay away show for both horses
⭐️ first EVER event for Mystify (Penny)!

We all had an absolute blast but the 🌟star🌟of the weekend has to go to Penny for experiencing Nationals as her first event and taking it all in her stride. Apart from some expected green moments we truly couldn’t fault her, from her temperament in the yards to warming up, hand grazing, her first XC round - I could just go on and on! Even successfuly tackled her first ever ditch 😆🙈
Posie was also super in what was hopefully her last 95 before stepping up to 105 next time - she’s yet to have a XC fault from her 5 events this season, she just LOVES it.

So many people to thank for their part this weekend;
Lynne McKenzie and Colin for everything🌟
Molly Rochford and Gaye Rochford 🩷
Holly Anderson
Penny Scully
Melwood Equestrian for last minute essentials and encouragement!
Eventing Canterbury and all judges, stewards, volunteers! We loved the auction and function and every steward I encountered was so lovely and helpful with young horses.
HUGE thanks to all the sponsors, particularly Penny Homes and Tavern Harewood for sponsoring the 95 and 65 respectively 🙏🏼🏆

This horse…🙈🤯😆
Sound ON so you can hear mum and I’s laughter!🤣
What a seriously cool horse Penny is turning out to be - only her second time seeing a solid fence! Feeling less and less inclined to sell her…🤔

Big weekend ahead for Penny with her first event at the NZ3DE 🙌🏼🏆 no pressure or expectations, just looking forward to three days of exposure and fun!

🩶MYSTIFY - Penny🩶

First look at cross country fences today for the beautiful Miss Penny! She completely exceeded our expectations and had an absolute ball. Think she’s going to give Posie a run for her money for the ‘favourite mare on the team’ award…🙈🫶🏼

The more we do with her the harder it becomes to want to part with her, however life is changing for me in a couple of months and this means I likely can’t keep them all 😔

Looking very much forward to her first show this weekend for some showjumping rounds followed by her first event the following weekend at the NZ3DE 🏆🤞🏼🏅
