RJM Lineage Spotlight: Doc’s Colonel Lee 🐎
When we talk about proven bloodlines in the RJM program, one name continues to stand out — Doc’s Colonel Lee. A truly legendary sire whose influence can still be seen across our horses today.
Imported from Ellerston Stud, the world-renowned breeding operation of Kerry Packer in the Hunter Valley, NSW, Doc’s Colonel Lee became a cornerstone of the Gloyn’s breeding program in Turangi. During his time, he was bred to more than 16 mares, producing offspring that would go on to make their mark both in New Zealand and around the world.
The majority of his progeny were exported internationally and played by some of the greatest names in polo, including Adolfo Cambiaso, Bautista Heguy, Silvestre Garros, John Paul Clarkin, and Glen Gilmore — just to name a few.
His horses weren’t just played at the highest level — they excelled there, winning Best Playing Pony awards in elite tournaments across the UK and NZ, including the prestigious NZ Open at Clevedon Polo Club. One standout was Fish Lee, ridden in the UK by Tom Morley after being trained and then sold.
Doc’s Colonel Lee also left a huge legacy in Polocrosse, producing champion ponies on the international stage. Two memorable mares include:
✨ Little Miss Muffet – played by Penny Webb, winner of Champion Pony at the UK Nationals.
✨ Lauren Lee – played by Rick Murray, also Champion Pony at the UK Nationals. Before export, Lauren Lee won the Morrinsville Open Polo Tournament & Best Playing Pony, then just three weeks later taking Best No.2 at the Roke Trophy Polocrosse Tournament.
(Lauren Lee was the best horse Rick has ever ridden in the thousands of horses he’s had)
To name a few more, some of these went to the UK and some stayed in NZ:
Mandy Lee
Cindy Lee
Bionic Lee
Tyson Lee
Socks Lee
Jet Lee
Gto by Brandon Lee
Bullet Lee
Zinzan Lee
Wrangler Lee
Donna Lee
Now, his legacy lives on through Ace’s Whiplash. Whiplash’s mother is a Colonel mare called Suger Lee.
Sugar Lee herself was a talented polo mare who played three seasons before injury forced an early retirement. She is also the mother to Ace’s Rain – owned and played by Kyla Zielinski for Kaikohe.
This is more than a bloodline — it’s generations of performance, talent, and champions.
We don’t have many photos of any Colonel horses so if you have any pictures or story’s of any special Colonel bred horses please put them in the comments so we can remember some of these legendary horses!
