Why Grooming Matters More Than You Think 🎀

Grooming isn’t just about a shiny coat, it’s actually one of the most valuable things you can do for your horse (and yourself).

For your horse:
✅ Boosts circulation: Regular use of a curry comb (known as currying in the US) stimulates blood flow to the skin and muscles, aiding recovery and muscle tone.
✅ Skin health:
Daily grooming removes dirt, sweat, and dead skin that can lead to fungal issues or tack girth galls
✅ Early problem detection: Hands-on time means you catch cuts, swelling, heat, or lumps before they become serious (many lameness and skin issues are caught during grooming, or picking out feet, and noticing a change)
✅ Bonding & trust:
Horses are prey animals; consistent, gentle touch lowers cortisol (stress hormone) levels and builds trust between horse and handler

For you:
🧠 Grooming has been shown to lower heart rate and blood pressure in humans through repetitive, mindful movement — similar effects to other rhythmic, tactile activities

🕰️ It slows you down — in a world of screens, 20 minutes with a brush and a horse is a genuine reset

💪 It’s functional exercise — the average groom uses dozens of muscle groups through brushing, lifting hooves, and stretching

Remember:
📊 Horses’ skin has roughly the same nerve density as human skin, meaning they feel far more than we assume, and gentle, correct grooming actually matters.

🔥ISLA - LEVEL 1 & 2 COACH🔥

Isla loves passing on knowledge and encouraging others to pursue their dreams with horses - she always showed a keen interest in teaching from the moment I met her, so when the business allowed I trained her up and got her in the arena with some students.

She has grown so much as a horsewoman over the past couple of years. With her TB mare Dolly, she was challenged to try new ways of communication and horsemanship, such as clicker training and liberty. She is always keen to learn new ways of thinking and training, one of the top qualities of a great coach.

Ironically, Isla also wants to study neuroscience just like Em, so she’s another smart cookie 🍪

Stan (owned by her twin sister Lily and Mum, Charis) and Ivan are usually her chosen mounts and she hopes to build her skills and confidence in eventing over the next few years.

Thank you so much for being a part of our team isla !! 🔥

Arriving early to groom and tack up isn’t just about preparation. It’s an opportunity to check in with your horse, build trust, and develop the kind of quiet awareness that makes for better riding 💅🏼

What the heck are FOOTFALLS?! 🦶

Footfalls are the sequence and rhythm in which a horse’s hooves hit the ground. Understanding them is fundamental to riding well and keeping your horse sound.

The basics:

🚶 Walk — 4-beat gait, each leg moves independently (1-2-3-4). Purest test of relaxation and rhythm; a horse can’t fake a good walk.

🐎 Trot — 2-beat gait, diagonal pairs move together (left fore + right hind, then right fore + left hind), with a moment of suspension between beats.

🏇 Canter — 3-beat gait: outside hind → diagonal pair (inside hind + outside fore) → inside fore, followed by a moment of suspension. This is why “leading leg” matters — it tells you which diagonal pair is landing together.

✅ Feel vs. guessing — knowing the sequence helps you feel which leg is where, so you can time your aids precisely (e.g., asking for canter as the outside hind is about to lift)
Riders that know their footfalls have much better timing with their aids.

Guess What? 🫠
I actually close my eyes sometimes while I am riding to focus solely on the footfalls. Give it a go in your next lesson for a moment or two…

I’ll post some challenges later this week for each BFNZ Level to practice their footfalls👌

EMILY - Level 1 & 2 Coach 🦄

Emily has been riding with us for a couple of years, and this year I invited her to do some coaching. She is an absolute natural at this, and is so clear and encouraging for her students.

Outside of riding, Em hopes to study neuroscience at university - she’s super smart!

One of my favourite things about Emily is that she genuinely struggles to pick a favourite unicorn!

Em is always trying to improve herself as a horsewoman and takes up every opportunity to be better for our horses.

Thank you Emily for being a part of our team! ❤️

MONKEY 🐒

Monk is a very special part of our family. I first saw Monkey on the hunt field in 2021. The hounds came careering round a hairpin towards the field, and Monkey just stood there while all the other horses scattered. He had such a recognizable face.

Later, when he came onto the market, both Holly and Abby said I should buy him. I had lost a lot of confidence after becoming sick in 2020 and they were convinced he’d be a great horse for me. Holly used to own him, and brought him on when she was younger - she knew him really well, and had followed him from owner to owner, ensuring he was happy.
I couldn’t find a time to view Monkey, as Sterling was in Starship at the time with a horrible virus, so Holly brought him to Belmont when I came home to pick up more meals, so I could try him. I sat on him for 10 mins and bought him. He was meant to be with us.

Since I’ve owned him, we’ve done low level jumping and dressage, adult ride, hunting, trekking, exploring and he even took Sterling to Pony Club.

He is one in a million, and every day I feel lucky that we have him here. He is the horse every new student rides first, as we trust him completely (and he’s voice trained!) - he’s built so much confidence within our family and beyond.

Let’s show some appreciation for Monkey! 👏👏👏👏👏👏

🐴 **THE BELMONT FARM LEVELS SYSTEM** 🐴

Ever wondered how we track your riding journey here at Belmont Farm? We believe great riders are built step by step, so we’ve broken it down into levels that help us track your progress so you’re getting the most out of your lessons.

**🟢 LEVEL 1 **
Where it all begins. Riders build the basic hand and leg aids, and start developing that all-important confidence in the saddle. This is the shift from being a passenger... to becoming a driver. This level is THE MOST important 🙌

**🟡 LEVEL 2 **
Now we’re building upon those fundamentals. Riders learn to maintain and adjust their paces, establish solid transitions, and get the chance to ride many different horses along the way. This level also introduces the basics of jumping, such as riding a track, balancing a corner building confidence over small fences whilst developing balance within our position 🏇

**🔴 LEVEL 3 **
Riders begin exploring bend and basic lateral work, while deepening their understanding of hand and leg aids. This is also where we introduce the influence of the seat; a huge step toward more advanced riding. ✨

EVERY LEVEL is a milestone worth celebrating.

Not sure where you’re at?

All riders can look forward to a report at the end of this term, direct from your coach. More on this in another post soon ✉️

Most of the best riders in the world learned on borrowed horses. probably more than 50% of the riders currently competing at the World Champs don’t fully own the horse they are riding.

Having a team of school horses to ride means learning to adapt… reading different personalities, adjusting your cues, staying balanced no matter the paces of the unicorn underneath you. That’s not a disadvantage! That’s real horsemanship.

You’re either training or untraining (one of Holly’s favourite phrases ) and it’s pretty impossible to develop a skill paramount to training such as feel or timing when you only ride one horse.

Owning a horse doesn’t make you a rider. Time in the saddle, good instruction, and putting in the work does 💪

So if you’re riding at a school and dreaming of your own horse one day KEEP GOING. You’re building skills that’ll serve you for life, and be better prepared for the horses in your future 🔮

You never know, the perfect borrowed horse might just find you… 🦄
