🐾 Litter Tray Troubles? Your Cat Might Be Trying to Tell You Something 🐾
Cats who were previously perfectly litter trained suddenly avoiding the litter tray is a red flag! These cats are not being naughty but trying to communicate that they aren't feeling right - whether that's physically, emotionally or environmentally.
Here are some common litter tray problems and what you can do:
🚫 Avoiding the tray completely
This can be linked to stress, pain, urinary issues, constipation, or an unclean tray. If the change is sudden, a vet check is important.
🧼 Tray too dirty
Cats are very clean animals. Scoop daily and fully clean trays regularly with mild, unscented products.
📍 Wrong location
Trays placed near loud appliances, busy walkways, or food bowls may be avoided. Choose a quiet, private spot.
🐱 Not enough trays
The general rule: one tray per cat, plus one extra. Multi-cat households often need more options.
🪨 Dislike of litter type
Some cats are sensitive to texture or scent. Unscented, soft clumping litter is usually preferred.
😿 Stress or anxiety
Changes at home such as new pets, visitors, moving house, or schedule changes can all affect litter habits. Providing safe spaces and routine can help.
⚠️ Straining, frequent trips, or accidents?
These can be signs of urinary tract disease, especially in male cats, and may require urgent veterinary attention.
