Hello Everyone

We wanted to update you on the current bird flu virus in New Zealand. We have 2 confirmed detections of H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza (H5 bird flu) as of August 4th 2026.

Bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects birds. However, it can also spread to mammals – including cats, dogs and people!

If you see 3 or more sick or dead wild birds in a group, report it immediately to the exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66 or online at report.mpi.govt.nz

Currently there are no vaccinations for poultry or cats available in New Zealand, however MPI are looking into this for the future. We also recommend taking down bird feeders as this can promote the transmission of diseases. Please see the photo below for important information.

MPI have a great source of information available, you can visit their website: https://www.mpi.govt.nz/biosecurity/pest-and-disease-threats-to-new-zealand/animal-disease-threats-to-new-zealand/bird-flu/about-bird-flu-and-the-risk-to-nz
