It is important to know that with synthetic rugs, the waterproof membrane is on the underside of the fabric. While the fabric may look simple from the outside, most waterproof horse rugs contain a special coating or membrane underneath the outer material that prevents water from soaking through.
Waterproof ratings on horse covers are commonly measured in millimetres (mm), such as 3000mm or 5000mm. This rating refers to how much water pressure the fabric can withstand before water begins to pe*****te through the material.
A 3000mm waterproof rating means the fabric can resist a 3-metre column of water before leaking. This level is generally considered waterproof for normal rain conditions and is suitable for many horses in moderate weather.
A 5000mm waterproof rating provides a higher level of protection. The fabric can withstand greater water pressure and heavier, prolonged rain before moisture pe*****tes. Covers with a 5000mm rating are often better suited to horses living outdoors in harsher winter conditions or high-rainfall areas.
It is important to remember that waterproof performance is not only determined by the mm rating.
*Seam sealing
*Fabric quality
*Breathability
*Proper rug care
*Good design
All these factors play a major role in how well a horse cover keeps water out over time. :)
