At Taranaki Veterinary Centre, we're very used to seeing cats, dogs, rabbits, and the occasional bird in our Small Animal Clinic. So when an adorable 10 day old baby goat called Penny arrived for a procedure, it was a bit of a unique experience for our team.
Penny came in to be disbudded, a common husbandry procedure performed on young goats to prevent horn growth. Although our largie team frequently carry out livestock procedures, it's not every day that we get such a tiny farm patient visiting the smallies department.
For her procedure, our little patient was first safely anaesthetised and received local anaesthetic nerve blocks around each horn bud. This helps ensure the procedure is as comfortable and pain free as possible. Once the area was fully numb, we carefully cauterised around the horn buds and removed the horn producing tissue. The underlying cartilage was then gently filed down to help reduce the chance of horn regrowth.
After the procedure, iodine was applied to the wounds to help keep the area clean, and she received an injection of pain relief and anti-inflammatory support. She was then sent home with additional pain relief and plenty of instructions for her owners to monitor her recovery. We're pleased to report she handled everything like a champion and was back home with her family the very same day.

Goats naturally grow horns, but there are several reasons why many owners choose to have them disbudded:
๐ธReduces the risk of injury to people and other animals.
๐ธPrevents goats from getting their horns caught in fences, feeders, or yards.
๐ธMakes handling and transport safer and easier.
๐ธReduces the risk of horn related injuries within the herd.
While horns do play a role in natural behaviour and temperature regulation, disbudding is generally considered the safest option for many pet and production goats when performed correctly and at the appropriate age.

In most goats, disbudding is ideally performed between 3 and 10 days of age, before the horn buds attach firmly to the skull. Younger kids generally heal faster, the procedure is easier to perform, and there is a lower risk of complications.
Male kids often develop horn buds slightly earlier than females, so they may benefit from being done at the younger end of this range.

Most kids recover very quickly after the procedure. Owners should:
๐ธMonitor the disbudding sites daily.
๐ธWatch for any swelling, discharge, or signs of infection.
๐ธEnsure pain relief is administered as directed.
๐ธKeep kids in a clean environment while the sites heal.
A small scab will typically form and eventually fall away as healing progresses.

Baby goats are called kids, and they're often standing, walking, and exploring within just a few hours of birth. Their curious and playful personalities make them wonderful pets, which is exactly why our little patient charmed everyone she met during her visit!
We loved having this special visitor in the clinic and wish her all the best as she grows into a healthy, happy goat. Thanks to her owners for trusting us with her care and allowing us to share her story as this month's featured patient. ๐๐
