🐾 STAFF SPOTLIGHT: MEET BROOKLYN! 🐶🐱

We’re excited to introduce Brooklyn, our Lead Veterinary Nurse! 💚

Brooklyn joined our team in April 2025, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a genuine passion for animal care.

🎓 Brooklyn holds a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Nursing and has gained valuable hands-on experience working in veterinary clinics throughout the Waikato region, in both nursing and reception roles.

Growing up on a dairy farm in the Matamata-Piako region sparked Brooklyn’s love for animals from an early age and inspired her passion for providing the best possible care to every patient. 🐄❤️

🐾 A little more about Brooklyn…

At home, Brooklyn is kept busy by her two cats and two dogs! When she’s not caring for our furry patients, she enjoys reading, listening to music, and spending quality time with her animals, friends, and family. 🐶🐱📚

We’re so lucky to have Brooklyn as part of our team, and we know our patients and their families are in great hands with her! 💚🩺

🐾💚 Happy Vet Nurse Appreciation Week! 💚🐾

This week, we’re celebrating our amazing veterinary nurses and everything they do behind the scenes and on the front line to keep our patients happy, healthy and well cared for. 🐶🐱

From comforting nervous patients and assisting with procedures, to monitoring anaesthetics, caring for hospitalised animals, educating clients and keeping everything running smoothly — our nurses do it all! 🩺✨

Their compassion, dedication, knowledge and love for animals make such a difference every single day.

🐾 Meet the Team! 👋

Ever wondered who’s behind the scrubs and caring for your pets? 🐶🐱

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing you to the wonderful people who make up our team! 💙

From our vets and veterinary nurses to our reception team, each person plays an important role in keeping your pets happy, healthy and well cared for.

Keep an eye on our page as we share a little bit about each team member — including what they do, their favourite part of the job, and maybe a few fun facts along the way! 🐾

First up… meet Dr Melissa McGinnis.

Melissa is a veterinarian who joined the team in September 2024. Originally from Wisconsin, USA, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin and practised in Arizona, working in general practice, emergency, and shelter medicine.
Melissa moved to New Zealand in 2022 and has been enjoying everything the country has to offer.
In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, camping, reading, and spending time with friends and their pets.

💛 Found Cat – Please Share

A deceased cat was brought into CareVets Horsham Downs today and we are hoping to find out if he has an owner.

He was found on the corner of Resolution Drive and Farringdon Drive.

- Male – entire
- Domestic Short Hair (DSH)
- Orange and white
- No microchip
- Estimated 3-5 years old
-Polydactyl (extra toes on his front paws)

🐾 Nugget at Work – Episode 1 🐾

Meet Nugget, our newest (and possibly least qualified) member of the team!

Today’s important job? Laundry Quality Control. 🧺

While the team is busy looking after your furry family members, Nugget likes to make sure everything behind the scenes is running smoothly. And apparently, that means personally inspecting the washing machine. 🐱

We’re not entirely sure how much work he actually does… but he certainly keeps us entertained! ❤️

This is the beginning of our “Nugget at Work” series, where we’ll share some of the important jobs Nugget gets up to around the clinic.

🐦 Bird Flu: A reminder to stay vigilant

While bird flu (H5N1) has not been detected in the Waikato, it's important for all New Zealanders to know what to do if they come across a sick or dead wild bird.

If you see one:
❌ Don't touch or move it.
📞 Report it to MPI on 0800 80 99 66.
🐕 Keep pets, especially dogs, away from sick or dead birds.

If your pet has had contact with a sick or dead bird, please give your local CareVets clinic a call for advice before bringing them in.

Early reporting helps protect our native wildlife, livestock, pets and communities. Thank you for helping keep New Zealand safe. 💙
