☀️ Every summer in Hamilton it goes the same way.
The rain stops in January. The lawn goes from green to straw in about a fortnight. The sprinkler rules go up. And half the street is out at 7pm with the hose, wondering if they're allowed. 🤷
Here's the short version. 👇
💧 Level 1: sprinklers 6 to 8am and 6 to 8pm
💧 Level 2: same times, alternate days. Even house numbers, even dates. Odd number, odd dates
🚫 Level 3: no sprinklers. A handheld hose is fine.
🚫 Level 4: no sprinklers, no hoses
Three things that make the water go further:
🌅 Water early in the morning. Less is lost to the sun, and it lines up with the sprinkler times anyway.
🥫 Water deep, not often. About 25mm once or twice a week beats a light sprinkle every night. Put a tuna tin on the lawn and time how long it takes to fill.
✂️ Leave it longer. A lawn cut short in December is the first one in the street to go brown in January.
🟫 And if it does go brown? Ryegrass isn't dead; it's having a rest. It greens back up a couple of weeks after decent rain. Just don't fertilise it or sow seed while it's brown.
