SG Stud - Boutique Equine Breeding Services

Off to a good start for the season with our first pregnancy confirmed - a frozen insemination too at that!

The mares have been taking their time to sync their cycles up correctly with the cold snaps of weather we have had (follicles and oedema not matching up as well as we would like) but with this last week of hot sun, we are having a busy end of the week and weekend 😵‍💫

You also may have noticed that we are not posting as often on our page - it's because we are really busy. Busy with stallions, mares, foals and also all our other projects we have on the go. Never a dull moment here 😅🙈 clients and their horses are more important to us than social media, so they come first.

We do have a few things we will share once we have some time.

Exciting season ahead for this lad!

Please do get in touch if you are not sure about AI - we are happy to chat with you about what is involved.

💛 Malfy - breeding season 2026 💛

Info being added here ⬇️

There are a few options that we have available...

* AI - available via SG Stud - Boutique Equine Breeding Services. Colette can manage your mare at her place, or arrange to ship semen - there is a booking form on her website for Malfy and collection costs are payable directly to her (she'll organise with us to do the collection). Worth touching base with her if you're unsure of the process as she is a wealth of knowledge and very helpful!

* live cover - walk in or leave with us.
For this, we need to know a few things (I am editing Malfy's booking form shortly to accommodate them) - the age and breed of the mare, if she's a maiden, grazing preferences (shared or alone, fed or fine on grass and haylage).
If walking in, we reserve the right to re-scan the mare if she's not teasing well, for everyones safety - we had a couple arrive last year who were most definitely not ready for service.
If leaving with us, it's helpful if you can get the mare scanned before coming, particularly if early on this season, as lots of mares are still 'springy' and not cycling properly yet.

Its the 1st of September!

Yes, this page has been quiet, but I (Colette) have had a lovely break from things and have been gearing up for this coming season.

We have some exciting things in the pipeline all going to plan, so stay tuned for those announcements and updates as we move along in the season.

We have many bookings coming in for foaling and for getting mares in foal as well as embryo transfers. Please do not leave booking in your mare(s) to get in foal at the last minute as you may find we have a wait list.

We also have a lot of exciting stallions coming in for AI collection training, so if you have been thinking about this as an option, chat to us now as spaces are limited for this.

Our point of difference is our attention to detail and the fact that we remain a boutique service which enables us to have the time, patience, resources and management strategies for individual horses in our care.

Come and find out what makes the difference - contact us for more information and prices.

You may have noticed its been a bit quiet on here for a while - that's because for the first time in 14 years I have decided to have a holiday!

Last week, however, saw a bustle of activity with SG Stud getting ready for the New Zealand Arabian Horse Society AGM and Stud Tour that was held for the first time in many years here in the Waikato.

SG Stud was proud to showcase our facilities for breeding and foaling as well as our resident stallions. We were blessed with incredible weather for this time of the year and this made the day very joyful.

We were very proud to present our Arabian stallions on the tour. All these lads are only groomed - no covers apart from Shell Fire who just has a waterproof sheet on.

Fed on Harvest Grains Feeds, all our horses are just glowing from the inside out 🥰

All photos were taken by Diane Gaskin and we are incredibly grateful for her photography skills on the day. Thank you so much for all you do for our incredible breed of horse.

SG Stud was proud to showcase and present:
Aspen Hills Shell Fire
24 year old purebred Arabian Stallion
Redwood Lodge Firewalker (AU) x Sunnybank Annashelle
Still going strong and still fertile.
Stud Fee for the 2026/2027 Season is $800+GST
AI only but we MAY allow some live cover for mares (conditions apply)

SG Firemaster
Anglo Arabian Stallion
Aspen Hills Shell Fire x Go To School (TB)
Superb temperament. Bred to cross over heavier Warmblood mares to refine. The progeny he currently has out there are moving machines. We are looking to get him classified with the Warmblood Association at the next classification.
Stud Fee for the 2026/2027 Season is $1,000+GST
AI only

and introducing our wee secret weapon that we have been keeping very quiet about...

SG Helios
3yo Purebred Arabian
Aspen Hills Shell Fire x Simeon Seana
Big thanks to Kelly Mason from Kelaray Stud for leasing us such a superb mare that gave me everything I was after as a future replacement for our old lad here.
Helios is a moving machine with an incredible presence. There were many 'wows' when we brought him out.
We have a lot of interest in people wanting to use him this season. If you are very keen, please get in touch and, if we have enough interest, we will look at training him for AI collection and analyse his swimmers before we make a commitment to nominating him and opening him up to stud.
Potential Stud Fee for the 2026/2027 season $1,200+GST with a discount for the first 5 mares (to be discussed with the mare owners)

If anyone missed the tour and would like to come and see our stallions and tour the stud, please do get in touch to make a booking. I am always more than happy to talk about my passion for breeding and foaling, as well as show you our very lovely resident stallions.

C-section video showing just a small amount of the huge team that is required for these situations.

The Vet that is pulling that foal out is very strong to lift and pull!

Thankfully no c-sections were required this season for foaling, but we did have two mares that required trips to the amazing Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre for foaling difficulties.

One for a mare that had a foal presenting very upside down and head back upon waters breaking and manual feel of birthing position. This didn't resolve with some manual repositioning and allowing the mares to try and roll the foal around. From Waters breaking until we made the move to drive her into the clinic for assistance and the foal being turned and foaling, the time was 40 minutes. Both survived and came back to SG Stud the next day after overnight monitoring.

The second was for a mare that we had to induce and foal on farm (an extremely rare occurrence) and her story will be told once I have finalised permission from her owner.

I cannot stress how important it is that mares are attended to at foaling, not only by an experienced team, but to also have a specialised equine vet (and clinic) very close by. This season there have been far too many foster mares required and foals lost from a lot of things that someone more experienced could have noticed and possibly prevented a loss.

People spend so much money, time and effort getting their mares in foal. There is such a long wait before foaling and so much emotion involved. Please send your mares away to experienced foaling places, that have oxygen and an equine vet and clinic on stand by.

The old boy Aspen Hills Shell Fire still has the goods - even at the grand age of 24yo

Pregnancy confirmed that we shipped to the south island

How gorgeous are these Garlands that we sponsored for the Waikato Arabian Show Group Arabian show on the weekend?

Made by Shiranna Garlands in Australia

Was nice to see something a bit different than a flower garland

Congratulations all riders! Especially having to deal with this current weather bomb!

Class 33: SG Stud - Boutique Equine Breeding Services FEI Young Rider – Freestyle to Music

The FEI Young Rider Freestyle to Music delivered quality performances and a standout result from one talented combination.

It was a dominant display from Samantha Belsham (Te Awamutu), who claimed both first and second place. Riding Donero RH, she took the win with an impressive 71.20%, producing a confident and expressive freestyle that combined technical accuracy with strong musical interpretation.

Backing that up immediately, Belsham secured second aboard Dolcetto II on 70.88%, narrowly missing another 71% score and showcasing remarkable consistency across two horses at this level.

Third place went to Gemma Lewis (Springston) with Ruanuku R, earning 65.79% after a composed and harmonious test.

A class that highlighted the depth and developing excellence within the Young Rider ranks, with freestyle flair very much on show.
