Dog owners! Do you need advice on trimming your pet's nails? ๐Ÿ•๏ธ We know it can sometimes be a daunting task, and many dogs (and owners!) are nervous when it comes to getting this done.

We've created a helpful guide explaining how to know if your dog's nails need trimming, important things to be aware of, and when to seek veterinary advice โค๏ธ Understanding the anatomy of the dog's nail is crucial in ensuring you can do this safely (avoiding the inner 'quick'), while keeping your dog happy and healthy.

Check out the detailed guide on our website, and please share this to help other dog owners in the community: https://www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/trimming-your-dogs-nails

Are you organised, and passionate about helping animals? Then we need YOU! ๐Ÿ™

SPCAโ€™s annual street appeal, Fill the Bucket, will take place across Aotearoa again this year on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 2026, and weโ€™re beginning our search for Volunteer Area Coordinators.

Funds raised from this appeal help us continue our vital work to save the lives of thousands of animals each year โค๏ธ You can join the amazing community of supporters by becoming a Volunteer Area Coordinator in your region. You can do this independently, or join up with a friend and double the fun!

Weโ€™re looking for people who can take on a leading role, be a friendly face for the volunteer street collectors, attend a training session beforehand, and commit to the two full days in October. Keen to be a part of the team? ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿถ Email us at [email protected].

Got a little extra land? Perhaps you live on a farm or a lifestyle block, or know someone who does? SPCA needs foster homes for farm animals! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ

We can't emphasise enough just how important our foster homes are ๐Ÿ™ Whether the animals need space to grow and gain strength, or recover from neglect or mistreatment, having a safe foster home is a key part in their journey to adoption.

Anita is one of our treasured farm fosterers.

"I love animals, and we have plenty of space since moving to a lifestyle block in South Auckland," Anita says. "When I realised we could help out by fostering, I decided to sign up.

"At this stage we had four alpaca of our own. I fostered Cosworth the alpaca, and he needed meds to help him with some of his ailments. It was so lovely to see his health improve.

"I totally recommend fostering. The SPCA team are there to support you if you have any questions or concerns, and they check in regularly." ๐Ÿฉต

Itโ€™s not just dogs and cats that need foster homes โ€“ but farm animals too! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–๐ŸŽ

Animals like goats, horses, pigs, and chickens often have the have the hardest time finding foster homes, as it requires a loving fosterer with the knowledge and the space to care for them while they wait for their forever homes ๐Ÿฉต

Christiane is one of our much-appreciated farm fosters, who was inspired by her love of animals to get involved.

"I enjoy meeting the new animals and gaining their trust, offering them a warm, safe environment and then meeting the lovely new family once they've been adopted," she says. "My most memorable fosters would be Maple, the three-legged goat - and 'Stinky Pete', the big gentle giant!"

Christiane's message to anyone considering fostering? "Give it a go! Fostering frees up space at SPCA so they can help more animals. There is no financial cost to you and it's extremely rewarding." ๐Ÿ™

With thousands of animals coming into our care in the lead up to winter, we need more foster homes! ๐Ÿ™

Fostering is perfect for those who want to make a difference for vulnerable animals, but canโ€™t make the long-term commitment of adopting. When you foster, everything you need is provided by SPCA, so thereโ€™s no cost to you.

Some animals need to spend time in foster to recover from injuries or surgery, while others may just need time to come out of their shells, socialise, or experience a loving home for the first time โค๏ธ

In order to meet demand and ensure we can free up space for more incoming animals in our Centres, we need an additional 250 foster homes for dogs and puppies, as well as small and farm animals too.

If you can provide a short-term loving home to an animal in need this winter, learn more and sign up via our website: www.spca.nz/fosterwinter2026

It's New Zealand Sign Language Week! ๐Ÿ™Œ Did you know next week marks 20 years of NZSL as an official language of Aotearoa, New Zealand?

To celebrate, our SPCA Education team has created a fun, free resource introducing children (and adults!) to NZSL through Animal Flash Cards ๐ŸŽ“๏ธ

Weโ€™re incredibly grateful to Vuw-nzsl, Ko Taku Reo and Deaf Aotearoa for their generous guidance and support. Their expertise helped ensure this resource is respectful, inclusive, and accessible, encouraging communication, supporting diverse learners, and building empathy for both animals and people โค๏ธ

Weโ€™re proud to work alongside organisations who help make learning more inclusive for everyone. Find out more on our portal here: https://ece.spcaeducation.org.nz/learning-experiences/
