A Far North farming couple has been fined $29,000 and banned from dairy farming over a lack of feed and poor treatment of their farm animals.

Mathew Hudson (78) and Josette Eleanor Hudson (73) were sentenced in the Kaitaia District Court this week (20/2/24) after pleading guilty to 4 charges under the Animal Welfare Act, following a successful prosecution by the Ministry for Primary Industries.

The Ministry for Primary Industries’ (MPI) regional manager, animal welfare and NAIT compliance north, Brendon Mikkelsen, says animal welfare inspectors visited the Hudsons' farm in September 2020, following a complaint about the poor condition of their dairy herd and lack of feed.

"One of their cows was found suspended in hip clamps, because it was severely underweight and incapable of supporting its own weight. The animal was suffering pain and distress for days from the abrasions on its bony hip area and it was euthanised to end its suffering.

"People in charge of animals are responsible for their health and wellbeing at all times. The Hudsons had kept this animal alive when they knew the animal was in extremely poor health and they did nothing until they were directed to by animal welfare inspectors."

Animal welfare inspectors found their cattle were producing less than 5 litres per cow per day, considerably less than they would be capable of if appropriately fed. Grass cover at their farm was uniformly low, and they were not providing supplementary feed to their dairy herd.

The inspectors concluded the Hudsons failed to provide proper and sufficient feed to all their animals. Of the 242 cattle at the farm, 69 cows were below the minimum standard of Body Condition Score, meaning they were too thin and needed urgent action to improve their condition.

"The Hudsons are experienced farmers who knew their responsibility to their animals and failed to live up to it. One of these cows was so thin, Mr Hudson used a tractor to drag it from a drain it was stuck in – leaving the animal with significant open wounds which were not treated.

"When we find evidence of neglect and cruelty to production animals – we will prosecute. Most farmers do the right thing for their animals – providing supplementary feed when needed and timely veterinarian care," Brendon Mikkelsen says.

In addition to the fines, the Court ordered the Hudsons to pay $18,213.72 in costs for veterinarian services and farm consultant fees.

MPI strongly encourages any member of the public who is aware of animal ill-treatment or cruelty to report it to the MPI animal welfare complaints freephone 0800 00 83 33.

Tena koutou
- Hello everyone,

Firstly, thank you very much to all of you, for your concerns and help to get the word out about our Missing Mare Lidia..

She has been Missing since October 2021 from the Taumarunui area.

It would be awesome if you could alert your farriers, as the NZAF ( NZ Association for Farriers ) as she would need a farrier for her front feet!

My family and I truly appreciate all your help!

Ka mihi

Hello all.
As it is a giving time of year, my family and I ask for your help in recovering our kids pony Lidia.

She went missing from the Taumarunui area of Hikumutu almost two months ago.
It has taken my partner and I a month and a half to search the entire property she was grazing on to confirm our suspicions that she was taken!

She was grazing with another mare of ours, who was quite distraught, her behaviour alerted us to discovere that her mate was missing.

Now she would have needed a farrier/ vet to tend to her front feet due to a bad split in the hoove which was causing seedy toe.

We are desperately seeking all your help to find our babies pony and bring her home to her mother and herd.

Any information leading to her recovery will be rewarded with a High Plains overnight trek here in the Ruapehu district, for a couple.

Meri Kirihimete me te tau hou kia koutou katoa.

"REMEMBER REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER"

GUY FAWKES IS ON THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER.
People know to put their animals inside and people who have concerns for loud noises (think PTSD) are prepared for this night.

THAT IS ENOUGH.

We expect a few people to do this on the nights around this (Diwali was just before), hell, some of us may even agree with a bit of the anarchy associated at times, but you had your opportunity now have the decency and empathy for the rest of your community and stop being so selfish.

********************************

Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain, involving bonfires and fireworks displays. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605 O.S., when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. The Catholic plotters had intended to assassinate Protestant king James I and his parliament. Celebrating that the king had survived, people lit bonfires around London; and months later, the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.
Festivities in Windsor Castle by Paul Sandby, c. 1776

Within a few decades Gunpowder Treason Day, as it was known, became the predominant English state commemoration. As it carried strong Protestant religious overtones it also became a focus for anti-Catholic sentiment. Puritans delivered sermons regarding the perceived dangers of popery, while during increasingly raucous celebrations common folk burnt effigies of popular hate-figures, such as the Pope. Towards the end of the 18th century reports appear of children begging for money with effigies of Guy Fawkes and 5 November gradually became known as Guy Fawkes Day. Towns such as Lewes and Guildford were in the 19th century scenes of increasingly violent class-based confrontations, fostering traditions those towns celebrate still, albeit peaceably. In the 1850s changing attitudes resulted in the toning down of much of the day's anti-Catholic rhetoric, and the Observance of 5th November Act was repealed in 1859. Eventually the violence was dealt with, and by the 20th century Guy Fawkes Day had become an enjoyable social commemoration, although lacking much of its original focus. The present-day Guy Fawkes Night is usually celebrated at large organised events.

Settlers exported Guy Fawkes Night to overseas colonies, including some in North America, where it was known as Pope Day. Those festivities died out with the onset of the American Revolution. Claims that Guy Fawkes Night was a Protestant replacement for older customs such as Samhain are disputed as England had no contemporary history of bonfires.
