Educational Post Time!

Recently, a client of mine was accidentally hit with a w**d whacker.
He suffered a broken leg, lacerations to his legs and severe blood loss. His owners acted immediately, got him straight to the vet and he is now at home recovering. It means at least eight weeks in a crate and a hefty vet bill, but he is okay.

I thought it was a perfect opportunity to educate all dog owners, and to spread awareness, that yes, this does happen.

This is the second dog I know of that has gotten in the way of a w**d eater. The first got a canine tooth knocked out and his mouth lacerated. I have heard of another dog that got their entire leg whacked off.

In the interests of protecting your dog - please put them inside when operating garden equipment. That includes the lawnmower.
We can never assume it will never happen, because it does.

Even if they have never gone anywhere near it before. Put them inside.
Even if they have never shown an interest in it. Put them inside.
Even if they are scared of it and keep away. Put them inside.
Even if you have "trained them" to stay away. Put them inside.
"My dog would never do that." Put them inside.

It's not worth the risk - according to the vets, it happens all the time. One wrong move and your dog could end up with serious injuries, or worse.

Happy 12th Birthday, Thor and Storm.

Browsing through old photos has me hysterically crying and laughing. What a joy they have been for the last 12 years.

Watching them grow old is both a privilege and terrifying.

Looking at their puppy photos brings back so many memories. They are the best part of my life and I would sell my soul to have them as puppies again.

Gosh they were cute. It's funny because they are both still the same.

Happy birthday my loves, I would like another five please.

Happy Eighth Birthday Omega! πŸ₯³

I have been walking Meggie twice a week since he was two years old πŸ₯Ή

He has been there since the start, across a wide variety of packs. The OG.

He is such a great dog. Handsome, very balanced, very calm, very dog neutral but full of personality.

Cheers to you Meggie!

Happy 3rd Birthday Mac πŸ’™

What a journey we have been on together.
Thank you for trusting me. I know it wasn't easy.
Thank you teaching me to trust myself.
We got there in the end.

Such a giant, handsome lad.
Still has his moments, but what a transformation.

One of my favorite parts of the day is going inside to get him, calling out his name and hearing his tail thumping on the bed 🀣

🍁 Pack Adventures 🍁

I was very proud of my crew during this walk.

We caught up with Carol and Andrea to form a mega pack.

Carol walked Mac, Rocco, Willow, Keira and Oona, Andrea had her solid behaved crew, and I had little Archie and Nala.

Everyone did very well. I was super proud of Mac because he hates strangers, but accepted Aunty Carol into his small circle of trust.

Training. It works, but you have to invest, you have to think outside the square, and you have to have a network of friends to help you.

Plus an amazing crew of dogs πŸ’œ

The two speed records, Nala and Arlo! ⏱️

When I first got the slatmill, I received a lot of criticism.

"You are forcing them to run"
"Just take the dog for a walk around the block like a normal person"
"It's unnatural to make a dog run like that"
"The dog is clearly stressed"

I always thought, do you go into a gym and ask the people on the treadmills why they are running?
Do you wait at the finish line of a marathon and ask them why they do it?

The truth is, some people love to run, and guess what, some dogs love to run too!

People are so good at depreciating a dog's capabilities. And lord forbid a dog enjoys this type of exercise.

1. No dog is forced to run. The dog has to want to run like this. If they don't run, it don't go πŸ˜‚

2. Some dogs don't have the drive and that's the end of that. They don't return. No force required.

3. Some dogs, like Nala and Arlo, were bred to run, and so running at their full potential is massive fulfilment. One look at their happy faces should be enough.

4. Both of them run at over 30ks an hour. A walk around the block isn't even going to touch the sides of that energy pool.

5. If that amount of speed, power and energy brews unchecked, what do we get?

Reactivity. Anxiety. Barking. Destruction. And a massively unfulfilled dog.

The slatmill is a once a week deal. Thirty minutes, done. Take the edge off, go home, have a nap.

I still have news, it's on the way πŸ˜‚

When there's things in the sky 🎈

A lady at the Arboretum had her dog off lead on Friday, and it was swimming in the pond.

Please do not do this, that water is extremely unsafe for dogs, and it also was unfair on the ducks.

Her excuse was, "I thought I was alone."

Always assume a dog could appear at any minute. And if you do not have a 110% reliable recall, you cannot have your dog off lead.
