We’ve recently seen many cases of humerus fractures on local farms, a nasty condition that impacts heifers going through their first lactation. An estimated 4,500 heifers are affected in NZ each year, and outbreaks can affect up to 10% of a single farm’s herd! 😯

👉 Learn about what causes these catastrophic bone breakdowns and how you can reduce the risk to your heifers here: www.vetsouth.co.nz/blog/post/169435/why-humerus-fractures-are-no-laughing-matter/

If a newborn lambs runs out of energy before getting a feed, it will go down very quickly. You can buy a bit of time by providing an energy source it can use immediately, with an intra-abdominal dextrose injection.

👉 Follow these steps from Vet Donna to correctly administer dextrose and hopefully save some lambs: www.vetsouth.co.nz/blog/post/169273/saving-lambs-with-dextrose/

This year was the 20th year of our 'Swede Safari' event, where a group of final-year vet students from Massey University come down to visit us for a glimpse into life, farming and veterinary work in the deep south 🙌

We'd like to thank the generous farmers who have opened their farms and shared their time and knowledge over the years – students are always struck by how willing Southland farmers are to welcome people onto their farms share what they know. It’s an important glimpse into the reciprocal bond that can be fostered between a rural vet and farmer, and the value each brings to the other 💚

Check out the photos of this year's students getting a taste of the trip's namesake and the first ever group below, and read more about how Swede Safari came about and what it aims to do here 👇

It's been a tough week out there for our sheep farmers who've been in the thick of lambing during this wild weather! Our West team wanted to show a little support, so today they hit the road with special smoko packs for some of our hardworking sheep clients 💚

📸 Here’s Vet Ange dropping off a well-earned smoko to Polly, who was busy feeding lambs.

Our young vets recently got stuck into a calf fetotomy training session, building their practical skills and confidence to tackle this challenging procedure. Getting hands-on experience and picking up tips from our more experienced vets helps set those new to the team up for success as they head into calving season 💪

We're proud to support Meet The Need NZ and the incredible work they do to help feed kiwi families experiencing food insecurity. Their newly released 2025/26 Impact Report highlights what's possible when farmers, businesses, foodbanks and communities come together:

🥛🍽️ 1,277,241 nutritious milk and mince meals delivered this year
📦 148 foodbanks supported across Aotearoa
💚 More than 4.2 million meals delivered since 2020

We're honoured to play a small part in helping ensure more families have access to nutritious protein when they need it most. Congratulations to the Meet the Need team and everyone involved in this incredible collective effort.
