🐾 Puppy Alert! 🐾
We had a serious case of puppy love in the clinic on Friday! These gorgeous Golden Retriever pups came in for their first parvo vaccination and completely stole everyone's hearts. It was a fantastic socialization experience, and they absolutely loved the attention.

Vaccinations are crucial for keeping your furry friends safe from serious diseases. These little pups are 8 weeks old, meaning they will require 2 more vaccinations before they reach 16 weeks of age. With recent confirmed cases of Kennel Cough and Leptospirosis in the Waikato area, we highly recommend adding these protective vaccines to your puppy's second and third round of shots.

If you’re looking to add to one of these golden bundles of joy into your family, contact the owners directly here:

Standing Tall with Our NZ Pound Teams! 🐾❤️

Our pound and animal control teams are on the absolute frontline of New Zealand’s companion animal crisis.

At Fundraising for Impounded Dogs, we see their massive hearts and hard mahi every single day.

We are unashamedly pro-pound—and it’s time to change the narrative.

Lately, there’s been a lot of anti-pound noise and bullying online. Let’s clear the air and look at the facts:

People fail dogs, not pounds. Every dog in a shelter was let down by a human somewhere along the line.

Overwhelmed facilities. Teams face an unprecedented sea of roaming and unwanted animals every single day.

The emotional toll. Staff work under immense pressure, making tough calls for community safety while caring deeply for their charges.A fresh start. For many dogs, goats, and horses, entering the pound is the first time they receive proper food, shelter, and safety. It is the end of a hard life and the beginning of a better one.

Filling the gaps. Your $1-a-week donations to our Kindness Kitty fund the extra vet care that tight council budgets simply cannot cover.

We pride ourselves on collaborating directly with council teams. We take pound-referred cases and work our magic—whether that’s helping a loving owner afford impound fees or giving an adoptable dog a second chance. But we only do this with animal control's endorsement.

To every animal control officer, shelter manager, and pound worker across Aotearoa: thank you. We see you, we appreciate your resilience, and we stand unified with you.Let's drop the blame, support the boots on the ground, and show some real kindness.
IMPOUND ISN’T ALWAYS A BAD THING.

We can do what we do, and say yes to helping, largely because of our kindness kitty.. $1 a week is life changing.

🐾 Meet Our Team: Bianca, Companion Animal Nurse
We are pleased to introduce Bianca, one of our dedicated companion animal nurses at Gordonton, to those who haven’t met her yet. Bianca moved to the Waikato at the end of 2023 with her family to experience life on a dairy farm, bringing with her a deep passion for animal care. Her diverse background allows her to provide exceptional support to both our patients and their owners, ensuring every pet receives the highest level of attention.

Since graduating as a veterinary nurse in 2017, she has gained extensive experience across mixed practices, including roles in large animal and equine tech, reception, and team leadership. This wealth of knowledge makes her a versatile asset to our clinical team and a friendly face you can rely on during your visit. When she isn’t at the clinic, Bianca enjoys helping out on the farm, reading, and spending quality time outdoors with her family.

🦎 From Lethargic to Lucky: A Blue-Tongue Journey
Meet one of our most resilient patients! A few weeks ago, this beautiful Blue-Tongue Lizard came to us feeling very "blue" indeed—she was lethargic, weak, and had completely lost her appetite.

🔍 The Investigation
When the first round of antibiotics didn't spark an improvement, it was time to dive deeper. She spent a full day with us for a "medical spa day," where our team:
-Performed a comprehensive blood panel to check her internal health.
-Administered subcutaneous fluids to combat dehydration.
-Analysed a faecal sample provided by her dedicated owner.
-Took radiographs to make sure there weren’t any organs enlarged or other internal problems.

💡 The Discovery
While her bloodwork luckily came back normal, the faecal test revealed the culprit: A large burden of Oxyuris (a type of parasite). With a clear target in sight, we started a tailored treatment plan involving anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, and specialized parasite treatment.

🥗 The Road to Recovery
Due to the slow metabolism of reptiles and their habit of hiding their symptoms for a long time before they become apparent to their owners, once clinical disease has developed, the recovery is never an overnight fix. For nearly two months, this brave lizard and her owner have been working tirelessly.

Ngama’s Recovery included:
-Patient Syringe Feeding: Her owner hand-fed her a specialized recovery formula, until she regained the strength to eat on her own.
-Habitat Upgrades: Fine-tuning her enclosure at home to ensure the perfect healing environment.
-Regular Check-ins: Monitoring her progress every step of the way and adjusting the treatment plan when needed.

The Result? She is officially on the mend! This lizard is lucky to have such a devoted owner who never gave up on her. We are so thrilled to see her getting back to her spunky, 100% self.
Does your reptile seem a little slower than usual lately? Don't wait—early intervention makes all the difference!

Time is moving on and we are not too far away from the first weekend of May! 🍂🍁
I hope all our clients who enjoy sitting outside in the early morning with the fog and the cold, are getting ready for another season of Duck Hunting! 🦆🦆

Just a few reminders for those who go out with dogs: 🐕🐕
* Make sure your vaccinations are up to date, especially for Lepto and Canine cough.
* Ensure your dogs get treated for fleas, ticks and have a Drontal worm tablet before going onto other peoples farms or Doc land.
* For the older dogs, do they need a check up for stiff joints before heading out? They might feel better if they have pain relief on board.
* Dry coats for those wet foggy mornings, and maybe a nice soft mat to rest on.
* Collars with tags attached and updated microchip records if registered on New Zealand Companion Animal Register, in case they go walk about.

Also another good thing to remember after all the weather we have been having around the Waikato, is if the water is safe for your dogs to enter, and retrieve ducks from! Please check whether it's safe by checking the LAWA website.
https://www.lawa.org.nz/explore-data/waikato-region

If any accidents occur to your dogs while out, please get medical treatment by contacting Waikato After Hours Veterinary Hospital in Hamilton, or contact your nearest Vet clinic.

Stay safe and look after your mates!

We know you don't need to be told to take care of your families, pets and livestock this weekend, with the coming weather.
But it doesn't hurt to take a minute to refresh your knowledge on what to do, if the worst happens!
So, please ensure all outdoor pets are kept inside if possible, if not, then ensure their enclosures are shut up tight and sheltered from the wind and rain, we may get.
Livestock - ensure they have shelter, and are perhaps put on higher ground if possible from any flooding that might occur. Check them if it's safe to do so, during any rough weather, but please take care.
