Ella is my dog niece. She wears a muzzle on walks because she’s a nervous lady who gets frightened of some dogs and people. Especially when she gets approached by off leash dogs. The muzzle manages risk when the unplanned and uncontrolled happens (an off leash dog runs up to her for example)

Ella is here to tell you that muzzled dogs are good dogs with a thoughtful owner who knows their dog and is managing risk before something goes wrong.

Some dogs wear a muzzle because they’re scared of strangers. Some because they’re working through big feelings around other dogs. Some because they hoover up anything on a walk (rubbish and poison bait). Some for vet visits or grooming.

A muzzle is a safety tool, not a sentence. When it’s introduced slowly with lots of good stuff, dogs genuinely relax into it. Lots of dogs get excited when the muzzle comes out because it means an adventure is coming.

When muzzled, dogs should be able to pant, drink and take treats.

So next time you see a muzzled dog, give them space and give their human a nod. They’re doing a good job.

We talk a lot about progress in this industry, but not always about what progress actually looks like. A dog who trusts you is doing just as well as a dog who’s “listening perfectly”, even if it’s quieter and harder to “brag” about.

Same goes for behaviour and common health problems. Before we jump to labels, it’s worth checking the basics first: what’s in the bowl, how’s the gut doing, is there pain hiding under there somewhere. So much softens when the body’s needs are actually met.

And trainers, this industry is better when we’re building each other up. Everyone’s path here looks different, and that’s exactly why we’ve got so much to offer one another. Dogs win when we work as a community instead of competing for who’s “right”.

Swipe through for all three. Would love to know what you’d add to this list 🧡

Marker training, demonstrated with coffee and cash. ☕💵

Sip. “YES.” Payment.

I now understand precisely what I did right and I am extremely motivated to do it again.

This is exactly how your dog learns too. The marker says “that, right there” and the reward says “so keep doing it.”

Timing is everything.

Somewhere along the way, we decided a good dog is one who doesn't act like a dog.
No barking. No pulling. No jumping up. No chasing the thing that just ran by. No stopping to investigate every smell on the block.

We want calm, quiet, endlessly patient. Basically a very furry houseguest who never asks for anything. But your dog isn't a houseguest. They're an animal with a nose built to track a scent trail for miles, legs built to move faster than you'll ever walk, and one real way to talk to you out loud.

The next time they do the thing you didn't ask for, it's worth a pause before the correction. Is this actually a problem behavior? Or is it just a dog, being a dog, in a world that keeps asking them not to be?

Boundaries still matter. A dog needs to know how to live well in your house and your world, but understanding what you're working with makes teaching that so much easier than just correcting your way there.

Save this for the next time your dog does something "annoying." Chances are, there's a real reason behind it.

Swapping raw for warm this week.

This week's prep: Chicken legs, lamb steaks, gizzards, kidneys & heart (organs = nutrient powerhouses), and a mix of veggies, all going into the slow cooker low and slow. Same balance we'd feed raw (protein, organ, veggies) just warmed up for the season. Once it's done, I pull every bone out before it hits his bowl (This is a non-negotiable)

Rotating warm meals into the week doesn't mean ditching the raw diet, it just means adapting to what the dog (and the weather) needs. Variety is one of the best things you can do for your dog's diet: Different proteins, different textures, different nutrients, all adding up to a more resilient gut and a dog who isn't picky about what's in the bowl.

What's your dog eating this week?

Zoomies to Zen filming is still in progress, but it will likely be launching a bit later than expected as you can only focus on so much as once 💚 Stay tuned 🐾

When we think about life with our dogs, it's easy to focus on what's still hard.

The pulling. The barking. The overexcitement. The things we're working on.

But the heart of Zoomies to Zen was never about creating a "perfect" dog.

Instead it's about helping you create more moments you can actually enjoy together.

The quiet cuddle after an adventure. The check in on a walk. The peaceful sniffing session. The contented sigh as they settle beside you.

The moments where you stop thinking about training and simply enjoy being with your dog.

Because while training skills matter, the relationship matters more. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is connection.

Sometimes the most meaningful progress isn't measured by what your dog can do. It's measured by how it feels to spend time together.

So today, take a moment to notice one thing you love about your dog.

Not something they've learned. Not something they've improved. Just something that makes you smile.

Because those little zen moments?

They're the reason we do all of this. 🐾💛

If you're ready to create more calm, connection and confidence with your dog, Zoomies to Zen is designed to help you get there, one small moment at a time (and it's coming soon!)
