Today, Takurua Vets is two years old!

Two years ago, we opened our doors with a simple goal: to create an independent veterinary clinic where pets could receive excellent care in a calm, compassionate environment.

In just two years, thousands of pets and their families have walked through our doors. We have expanded the care we provide, introduced services such as radioactive iodine treatment and PennHIP screening, become accredited in the Zero Pain Philosophy, and reached the milestone of having every member of our team Fear Free certified.

None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary support of our community.

Whether you trusted us with a routine appointment, a stay in our cattery or an emergency at 2am, recommended us to a friend, left us a kind review or simply encouraged us along the way, thank you. Your trust has allowed an independent local clinic to grow and achieve more than we could have imagined in just two years.

We are equally grateful to every person who has helped build Takurua Vets, past and present, and who has cared for our patients with such dedication. It takes a special kind of veterinarian, nurse or support person to keep saying yes to the animals and people who need them, and to continue practising at their best every day with compassion and determination.

To celebrate our second birthday, we are doing what we have always set out to do: making veterinary care a little easier to access when your pet needs it.

Takurua Vets will now remain open until 10pm every weekday night, and we are also opening on Sundays. This will make veterinary and urgent care available across more of the week.

We are also about to welcome our fourth veterinarian. There is still more to come, so watch this space.

Thank you for making these first two years possible. We cannot wait to show you what comes next.

Happy second birthday, Takurua Vets!

We’re proud to announce that Takurua Vets is now accredited as a Zero Pain Philosophy Practice.

Pain management and prevention is a major focus for our team. Animals are really good at hiding pain, so we work hard to recognise it early and keep our patients comfortable.

We use multimodal pain relief, which means combining different medications and techniques that work together to provide better comfort than any one treatment alone. We also routinely use local and regional nerve blocks to reduce pain during and after surgery or procedures.

Our entire team is committed to this approach. All of our vets and nurses are trained to recognise signs of pain and, wherever possible, prevent pain before it occurs.

You can rest assured that when your pet is in our care, their comfort is never an afterthought.

We’re really proud to have our commitment to pain management recognised through Zero Pain Philosophy accreditation.

🐾 Silly billy Kaia 🐾

Kaia was referred to by the fabulous team at Takurua Vets. She presented with an intermittent left hindlimb lameness that worsened after rest and longer walks. Despite staying bright and active, subtle signs like uneven sitting and weight shifting suggested something more significant was going on.

This patient underwent a complex corrective surgery for a medial patellar luxation (MPL) and partial cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) tear, including:
🦴 Distal femoral osteotomy (DFO)
🦴 Trochleoplasty
🦴 Modified TPLO

Intra-operatively, a partial CrCL tear and significant patellar instability were confirmed. Advanced planning allowed correction of limb alignment, improved patellar tracking, and stabilisation of the stifle.

Post-operative radiographs showed excellent implant placement and patellar alignment, with physiotherapy planned to get underway to support recovery and return to function 🐕

This case is a great reminder that ongoing “on-and-off” limping is often more than just a minor strain, and early investigation can make a big difference to long-term comfort and mobility 🖤

It’s crunch time!!! 🚨

Our rescue centre has been sold, our lease expires in 65 days & we have no place to go!

We have been searching high & low for another property to lease but we have had zero luck & time is fast running out.

We currently lease an 820sqm concrete sealed section in industrial Woolston with a small garage & office. This costs us $3900 per month to lease. While ideally we want to grow in size, in these uncertain times we have to be realistic. Donations are down by more than $40,000 in the past year so a lease of this size is not going to be sustainable.

Christchurch is a small place. We all know someone who knows someone. So we are calling in all favours & putting this alert out to anyone & everyone. If you have never shared one of our posts before, please make this the first!

Calling all estate agents, real estate tycoons, & land bankers. Everyone’s whose brother or sister is into property. Your rich uncle Arthur who likes dogs, the mayor, King Chuck? SPREAD the WORD! Please help us find somewhere suitable to go.

CBBR has always been the shelter a community built & now we need your help to build another one. Shutting up shop is not an option. The dogs need us! ❤️

Pets don’t always cry or limp when they’re in pain.

Slowing down, behaviour changes, or “just getting older” are often signs of discomfort. And the most painful pets are often the quiet, stoic ones.

The good news? We can help 🤩
