When a sit doesn't go to plan 🌈🐾

Most of the time, pet sitting is exactly what you'd expect, walks, feeds, cuddles, and updates for the owners. But every so often, a sitter finds themselves in a much harder situation.

One of our sitters recently had a pet in her care start to decline while the owners were away and unable to get back in time. She stayed in close contact with both the vet and the owners throughout, and together they made the decision to have the dog put to sleep with the vet coming to the house, the owners joining via video call, and a close family member present in person.

Situations like this are rare, but they're an example of why it matters to have a plan of action agreed on before a sit ever starts. A proper service agreement that covers emergencies means the sitter and owner both know what's expected, who gets contacted, and how decisions get made so no one is figuring it out under pressure.

It's something we encourage every sitter to have in place, and we provide a thorough service agreement free to all registered members to support them in thinking this through in the unlikely event you find yourself in a similar situation.

This is part of the reason we started Pet Sitting NZ to promote professional pet care. As much as the sits often go right, there is so much that can go wrong with someone who isn’t prepared with a service agreement. Verifying sitters with references and preferably, someone who you can build a relationship with you and your pet, not a one off situation. The question we ask often is, are they there to serve your pets best interest or for free accomodation. 🫣 professional (paid and prepared) care is always best.
