It's Ungulate Day 🙌 A day to celebrate the world's hoofed mammals. Ungulates play a vital role in shaping landscapes globally. Through grazing and browsing, they manage plant growth, prevent overgrowth, and create space for other wildlife to thrive. Even their droppings matter as it helps to spread seeds and enriches the soil, supporting healthier, more diverse plant life.

But many of these species are under pressure. Around 43% of the 280+ known ungulates are currently listed as critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Land to graze is important for many ungulate species, but this is disappearing due to farming and development. They also face threats from hunting, climate change, and competition with livestock.

So what can we do?
• Skip wildlife souvenirs when on holiday
• When shopping look for FSC-certified paper and wood products
• At the supermarket use the PalmOil Scan app to check for sustainable palm oil (CSPO)
• Try a meat-free meal each week

Small changes over time, help protect the future of these ecosystem engineers.

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓ Addax can survive for months without drinking water, a remarkable adaptation to life in the desert.
Instead of heading to water sources, they get almost all their moisture from the grasses and plants they eat.

A huge thank you to Dolf and Elna van Amersfoort some of our wonderful supporters for donating three colourful electric cars to the Park! Their love of wildlife and visits to Orana sparked the idea to donate these vehicles to help our team move around the Park easier, to care for our animals and visitors. We’re so grateful for their generosity and to have Dolf and Elna as part of our Orana whānau!

❓FUN FACT FRIDAY❓Highland cows use their long horns to rake snow away, when foraging for food in the winter. Hopefully this won’t be an issue for Heather in Christchurch!

A princess has arrived, just in time for King’s Birthday weekend!
A delightful zebra foal was born on Friday 15 May at Orana, and she is full of the zoomies (but also lots of naps).
Our yet-to-be-named girl is already full of personality. Both baby and Mum, Asale are doing well, and older brother Herbie is adjusting to not being the baby anymore.

If you’re visiting this weekend, slow down… you might just catch a glimpse of this special wee girl – the first female zebra foal born at Orana in over 30 years.

If you don’t see Asale and her baby in their habitat, pop back later as they may be resting.

When you’ve found the sunniest spot to have a nap, but your brother wants to play 🤣
