Animal Orthopaedics Christchurch

Animal Orthopaedics Christchurch At Animal Orthopaedics Christchurch, we focus on providing gold standard elective orthopaedic packages to referring veterinary practices and their clients.

It is stressful enough knowing your pet requires surgery. For peace of mind, our packages have fixed prices so there are no unwanted financial surprises. Four physio sessions are included in each orthopaedic package to restore mobility quickly. Our leading hospital is fitted with advanced equipment including a CT machine, temperature-controlled recovery room and Game Ready athlete healing system.

Our experienced surgical team performs each surgery precisely, calmly and quietly. After surgery, your pet wakes up in a dedicated temperature controlled warming room. During anaesthesia recovery, our lovely recovery nurse sits with your pet so they are not alone. All our patients go home with multimodal pain relief on the same day of surgery. This avoids separation anxiety and expensive after-hours care.

🐾 Bella's Back to Living Life! From bedrest to Beach Days 🩴🐾

Almost one year after her bilateral TPLO surgery, Bella is back doing what she loves—running, playing, exploring the beach, and climbing hills. 💪

Bella's amazing owner mentioned that recovery wasn't always easy, especially with both knees operated on at once and a young Staffy sibling encouraging plenty of activity! But with the support of her family, our team, and ongoing physiotherapy with Lucy Finch, Bella has made an amazing recovery!

"Overall, we couldn't be happier with the outcome. Thank you for helping give our Bella her active life back."

Thank you, Jo and Craig, for trusting us with Bella's care, Veterinary Centre Oamaru for referring Bella over to us and a special thanks to Lucy Finch for her out of town physio support throughout Bella's rehabilitation. 🐾🖤

🐾🐈‍⬛ We can't forget about our feline friends. 🐱

Cat owners can assume that reduced activity, reluctance to jump or changes in behavior are just part of getting older. But these can all be signs of pain.

If you are worried that your beloved feline might be “slowing down” then check out https://painfreecats.org/ or see your vet to check in.

Every cat deserves a comfortable pain-free life.

McCaw was referred to us by West Melton Vet Centre for assessment of an acute right hind limb lameness. Initially, he was barely weight-bearing and hobbling significantly, and although with rest and medication, there has been some gradual improvement, he was still hopping on the limb when running and has stopped enjoying activities that he would normally love!

On examination, we identified:
✔️ Significant right stifle (knee) instability
✔️ Joint swelling and arthritis changes
✔️ Muscle loss in the affected limb
✔️ Positive tibial thrust, consistent with a cranial cruciate ligament rupture
✔️ Possible secondary meniscal injury

After discussing treatment options with his family, the recommended plan was a TPLO (Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy) surgery to stabilise the knee and improve long-term comfort and mobility.

McCaw's surgery was a big success. A completely ruptured cranial cruciate ligament and torn medial meniscus were confirmed, with a partial meniscectomy performed. The TPLO was stabilised with a locking plate, and recovery has been smooth with excellent pain control throughout.

Wishing you the best recovery buddy 🐶

Big day for brave Boh today! 🐾

Following PennHIP screening, we performed a Juvenile P***c Symphysiodesis (JPS) procedure on Boh to help support healthy hip development as she grows.

A skin incision was made over the p***c area and carried through the subcutaneous tissue. A small opening into the abdomen was performed to allow protection of the pelvic structures during the procedure. Electrocautery was then applied along the front of the p***c symphysis in small intervals with regular cooling lavage throughout. The surgical site was routinely closed in multiple layers.

Thank you to Takurua Vets for yet another fabulous patient referral! Now for the important part of recovery: rest, recovery, physio, and lots of love at home ❤️

🖤 Caring for Our Own 🖤 - Even our clinic dogs need a little TLC sometimes 🐾

One of our beloved staff dogs, Murph, needed a surgery for a removal of a growing upper eyelid mass. At 11.5 years young, he’s still living life to the fullest — including keeping everyone entertained with his usual antics!

Our nursing team provided plenty of extra cuddles, comfort, and attentive care throughout the day, making sure he felt safe and relaxed every step of the way 🐕

We’re very lucky to have nurses who care for every patient like family — especially when they actually are family 🖤🐾

⚖️ Do You Know Your Dog’s Ideal Weight? 🐾

A few extra kilos might not seem like much — but in dogs, even small amounts of excess weight can significantly increase pressure on joints, worsen arthritis, and reduce mobility.

Maintaining a healthy body condition can help:
🐕 Reduce joint pain
🐕 Improve mobility and energy
🐕 Lower the risk of cruciate injuries
🐕 Support a longer, healthier life

If you’re unsure about your dog’s ideal weight, chat with your regular vet — a tailored weight-loss plan can make a huge difference to comfort and quality of life 💪

🐾 Silly billy Kaia 🐾

Kaia was referred to by the fabulous team at Takurua Vets. She presented with an intermittent left hindlimb lameness that worsened after rest and longer walks. Despite staying bright and active, subtle signs like uneven sitting and weight shifting suggested something more significant was going on.

This patient underwent a complex corrective surgery for a medial patellar luxation (MPL) and partial cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) tear, including:
🦴 Distal femoral osteotomy (DFO)
🦴 Trochleoplasty
🦴 Modified TPLO

Intra-operatively, a partial CrCL tear and significant patellar instability were confirmed. Advanced planning allowed correction of limb alignment, improved patellar tracking, and stabilisation of the stifle.

Post-operative radiographs showed excellent implant placement and patellar alignment, with physiotherapy planned to get underway to support recovery and return to function 🐕

This case is a great reminder that ongoing “on-and-off” limping is often more than just a minor strain, and early investigation can make a big difference to long-term comfort and mobility 🖤
